Job Description

The Legal Aid Society's Parole Revocation Defense Unit has an opening for a Staff Attorney beginning in Fall 2025. The Staff Attorney will represent clients accused of violating their conditions of release at administrative parole revocation hearings and recognizance hearings across various locations in New York City. Responsibilities include appearing in courts, federal detention facilities, and other related proceedings. The practice is fast-paced and litigation-intensive.

The unit maintains offices at 260 East 161st and 199 Water Street, with attorneys spending significant time in Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens courtrooms.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Handle all stages of parole revocation cases, including hearings, discovery, negotiations, contested hearings, appeals, and post-conviction proceedings.
  • Collaborate with support staff, paralegals, and investigators to provide effective defense.
  • Partner with social workers to identify and develop mitigation strategies for clients with mental health, substance abuse, or medical needs, or who are suitable for alternatives to incarceration.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Required:

  • New York State Bar Admission or pending application; law school graduation in May 2025 with registration for July 2025 NYS bar exam and August 2025 NYLE considered.
  • Minimum 2 years relevant experience preferred.
  • Strong courtroom skills.
  • Background in criminal, administrative law, or prison-related litigation is relevant.
  • Fluency in Spanish is strongly preferred.
Salary and Benefits

The salary range is $83,844 - $147,907, based on experience and qualifications. The Society offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, paid leave, disability, and life insurance. Employees may also qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness and other loan repayment programs.

Work Authorization

Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship. The Society cannot sponsor visas, except for Canadians and Mexicans with TN visas.
