POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

POSITION: Staff Attorney – (Full-Time Position)

CLOSING DATE: Position Immediately Available and Closed When Filled

LOCATION: Hybrid Remote - Lubbock, Texas

OVERVIEW:

Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas (LANWT) seeks a dynamic, self-starting attorney with vision, initiative, and a demonstrated commitment and passion for public interest law to fill a staff attorney position in its Lubbock Office. The successful candidate will provide daily representation in civil legal matters, demonstrate a commitment to strategic advocacy, and engage in outreach and collaboration with low-income persons and community groups serving the indigent.

DESCRIPTION:

LANWT is a non-profit public interest law firm providing high-quality free civil legal services to low-income persons across 114 counties in North and West Texas. Located in Lubbock, the office serves a diverse urban and rural community.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Gather evidence, advise clients on their rights, draft legal documents, and conduct civil lawsuits.
  • Interview clients and witnesses with cultural competence.
  • Represent clients in court and before administrative agencies.
  • Interpret laws, rulings, and regulations for clients and the community.
  • Provide legal assistance in areas including housing, foreclosure prevention, landlord-tenant issues, family law, consumer law, probate, special education, public benefits, and bankruptcy.
  • Design and implement outreach and community legal education programs.
  • Collaborate with community and low-income groups to further LANWT’s mission.
  • Supervise and coordinate activities of legal, clerical, volunteer, or student workers as needed.
  • Handle a substantial litigation caseload, attend evening clinics, and conduct community outreach.

The attorney will provide high-quality representation in accordance with LANWT policies, Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct, the Texas Lawyers Creed, and ABA standards.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Licensed to practice law in Texas.
  • Experience with contested litigation.
  • Strong knowledge of Texas Rules of Civil Procedure and Evidence.
  • Experience serving low-income persons through legal services, public interest, or volunteer work.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strategic thinking and project development skills.
  • Strong work ethic and accountability.
  • Fluency in Spanish (verbal and written).
  • Excellent attendance record.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for work-related purposes.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:

The starting salary for a new attorney is $73,815 annually, with potential for higher compensation based on experience. Benefits include paid sick leave, vacation, holidays, a retirement plan, and health, dental, vision, and life insurance.
