Job summary

New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) seeks a Law Graduate/Staff Attorney to support the Community Access Programs Unit (CAPU). The role is temporary through December 31, 2026 and reports to a Supervising Attorney.

It will support Legal Hand East Harlem, and involve coordinating volunteers and providing civil legal information to communities. The position requires a JD and at least one year of civil legal services experience, with a strong commitment to social justice and serving low-income

Qualifications

• J.D. degree and at least one year of civil legal services experience.
• Commitment to social justice and serving low-income communities.
• Experience working with diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and linguistic groups.
• Strong written and verbal communication, organizational, and time-management skills.
• Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and partners.
• Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities

• Operate the Legal Hand East Harlem Call-In Center under supervision.
• Review volunteers' notes and provide compliant civil legal information.
• Maintain and update NYLAG case management files and grant reporting.
• Recruit, onboard, train, engage, and retain volunteers.
• Develop and update Legal Hand East Harlem resources and databases.
• Provide legal information and guided referrals on civil issues.
• Participate in legal clinics, community events, and coalitions.
• Create an inclusive environment for volunteers and community members.
• Identify emerging legal needs in the community.
