Job summary

NYLAG seeks a dynamic Law Graduate/Staff Attorney to join its Community Access Programs Unit and support Legal Hand East Harlem. This temporary role reports to a Supervising Attorney and runs through December 31, 2026.

You will help run the call-in center, review volunteers' notes, maintain case management files, assist with grant reporting, and support outreach and trainings. Strong communication and a commitment to social justice are essential, with bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

Qualifications

• A Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and at least one year of experience in civil legal services, including housing, public benefits, family law, immigration, or related areas.
• A demonstrated commitment to social justice and serving low-income, underserved, and marginalized communities.
• Experience working effectively and respectfully with individuals from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and linguistic backgrounds.
• Strong written and verbal communication, presentation, organizational, and time management skills.
• The ability to thrive in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment and build effective relationships with internal and external partners.
• A strong interest in community empowerment and a commitment to making legal information accessible to all.
• Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed.
• Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

• Working alongside the Supervising Attorney, ensuring smooth day-to-day operation of the Legal Hand East Harlem Call-In Center
• Reviewing volunteers’ notes and helping them to provide legal information to communities while also complying with relevant LHEH and NYLAG policies and procedures
• Complete administrative duties including maintaining and updating NYLAG case management files, assisting with grant reporting as needed and developing, maintaining and updating Legal Hand East Harlem resources and database
• Supporting volunteer recruitment, onboarding, training, engagement, and retention efforts
• Developing, maintaining and updating Legal Hand East Harlem resources and databases
• Assisting with the provision of legal information and guided referrals on a range of civil legal issues, as appropriate
• Participating in legal clinics, community presentations, stakeholder and partner coalitions, and outreach events
• Creating a welcoming, inclusive, and support environment for Volunteers and Community members
• Identifying emerging legal issues and community needs
• Other duties as needed.
