Job Description

The Legal Aid Society has an opening for an Adolescent Intervention and Diversion (AID) attorney in the Bronx Criminal office. AID is an interdisciplinary team model comprised of Staff Attorneys, Mitigation Specialists, and Investigators dedicated to representing teenage clients prosecuted in the adult criminal courts. The unit provides criminal defense, including under the Raise the Age law, and offers holistic advocacy in education, foster care, mental health, and substance use. We also engage in policy work to serve our clients' needs across various systems. AID collaborates closely with the Juvenile Rights Practice, which represents youth in family court and child welfare systems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Represent clients aged 14-17 in Supreme Court.
  2. Handle adolescent offender arraignments and litigate cases involving felony cases, including efforts to transfer cases to family court, and litigate remaining cases in Youth Part and other criminal courts.
  3. Engage in collateral systems work such as school advocacy, interactions with foster care, youth shelters, mental health, community agencies, and visiting clients in detention, jail, or prison facilities.
  4. Collaborate with Juvenile Rights Practice lawyers, social workers, and CDP practitioners, including specialty projects.
  5. Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

Required qualifications:

  • New York State Bar admission.
  • Full Felony certification.
  • Experience in mitigation and sentencing advocacy.
  • Interest in working with young people, families, and related systems.
  • Interest in interdisciplinary team work.
  • Willingness to participate in area-specific training.
SALARY AND BENEFITS

The salary range is an estimate based on experience and qualifications. The actual salary may vary.

Salary Range: $83,844 – $147,907
