Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) operates in Baltimore, MD, seeking a housing attorney to work under the Access to Counsel - Tenant Right to Counsel grant. The role involves litigating housing matters in state courts and coordinating with a team of legal professionals.

MLA’s core work includes eviction and foreclosure prevention, family law, children’s rights, consumer protection, securing public benefits, and access to healthcare. MLA advocates operate primarily through the courts, via individual representation of indigent clients, but also engage in impact litigation, public communication and outreach, and policy advocacy.

MLA announces an immediate opening for a housing attorney working primarily under the Access to Counsel -Tenant Right to Counsel grant. The Housing and Consumer Law unit is located in Baltimore, MD. Staff attorneys will be expected to work with other attorneys, law graduates, law clerks, legal assistants, paralegals, social workers, and students on cases or projects. They must maintain all case files in accordance with MLA standards. The Baltimore City Housing and Consumer Law Unit handles the following types of housing and consumer cases: landlord/tenant cases involving private landlords and public and subsidized tenancies, Mortgage Foreclosure defense, breach of contract, repossessions, bankruptcy, tax sale defense, debt collection and student loan collection. A staff attorney in the Housing and Consumer Law Unit will need to litigate before all state courts and administrative bodies. This position handles housing related legal matters including all functions related to casework, from initial intake through representation of clients in all relevant courts and proceedings.
Admitted to practice in the State of Maryland, or admitted in another jurisdiction and eligible for admission in the State of Maryland. Out-of-State attorneys must be able and available to take next scheduled bar exam following date of employment. Spanish language proficiency is desirable.
Work duties are typically performed in a general office setting with regular interaction via telephone, videoconference, instant messaging, and email, in-person, and in a courtroom. Certain work duties may be performed in community settings.
The current salary range for the staff attorney position is $76,812 - $118,565. Staff attorneys will be paid by MLA’s Workers Union’s current salary scale, which is subject to revision annually through collective bargaining negotiations. For example:
Salary placements for attorneys are on the earliest date of admission to a U.S. state bar, assuming eligibility to practice (either under the Maryland bar or under Rule 15 if another state bar) and continuous full-time legal work experience following the date of admission. In addition, MLA provides employees with a generous benefits package that includes health, dental, vision, life insurance, a 401(k)-retirement plan, two weeks paid time off, sick leave, 14 annual paid holidays, and more. Future flexibility regarding a hybrid work arrangement is a possibility after the onboarding period.
