Job summary

County of Los Angeles is seeking qualified candidates for emergency Staff Assistant I vacancies related to homelessness. Under the emergency order, initial appointments may be up to 90 days with a chance for permanent County employment.

Successful applicants will be assessed 100% on performance and may advance to permanent appointment in the Department of Mental Health.

Qualifications

  • One year's experience in staff capacity analyzing problems or in secretarial/supervisory clerical roles.
  • Staff capacity means advisory support to line managers.
  • Highly responsible secretarial capacity means full-time secretarial support for a top supervisor.
  • Supervisory clerical capacity includes planning, hiring and evaluating clerical staff.
  • NO OUT-OF-CLASS EXPERIENCE WILL BE ACCEPTED.
  • REQUIRED EXPERIENCE MUST BE MET AND indicated by filing deadline.
  • NO WITHHOLDS WILL BE ALLOWED FOR THIS EXAM.

  • Analyzes and makes recommendations to the unit manager for the resolution of problems of work procedure and space allocation.
  • Prepares reports and projections of workload and staffing for the manager of the unit.
  • Coordinates and resolves problems between the unit served and departmental housekeeping, payroll, personnel, and reproduction services.
  • Has responsibility for evaluating, ordering maintaining, loaning, and inventorying supplies and equipment, and for resolving procurement problems with the departmental supply officer.
  • Supervises clerical personnel with responsibility for assigning and reviewing work, orientation, training, development and evaluation of work performance.

The Department of Mental Health is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Staff Assistant I vacancies related to the homelessness crisis.

Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment.

Before the end of your initial work period, you will be assessed on your work performance. This assessment will be weighted 100%.

Those who successfully pass the assessment will be considered for permanent appointment to Staff Assistant I.

  • Prepares reports and projections of workload and staffing for the manager of the unit.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

One year's experience in either (1) a staff capacity* analyzing and making recommendations for the solution of problems of organization, procedure, program, budget or personnel, or (2) a highly responsible secretarial capacity**, or (3) a responsible supervisory clerical capacity***.

* Staff capacity is defined as working in an advisory capacity to line managers to provide program and administrative support.

** All classes in the Secretarial Group perform duties composed of essentially the same basic activities and operations. Positions in these classes are allocated when the work of the supervisor requires full-time personal secretarial assistance. The level of secretary allocated is related primarily to the level of supervisor served. Highly responsible secretarial capacity is defined as working as secretary to provide full-time secretarial assistance to the head of a major section or minor division having 1,000 or more employees.

*** Supervisory clerical capacity is defined as having full supervisory responsibility including planning, assigning, scheduling, hiring, rating performance evaluations, disciplining, and counseling clerical employees. Provides day-to-day technical and administrative supervision to subordinate clerical staff.

NO OUT-OF-CLASS EXPERIENCE WILL BE ACCEPTED.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE MUST BE FULLY MET AND INDICATED ON THE APPLICATION BY THE LAST DAY OF FILING.

LICENSE

A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

PHYSICAL CLASS

Physical Class II - Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.
