Job summary

Ford's Electric Vehicles, Digital and Design (EVDD) team seeks an experienced Android software engineer to design and implement core Android framework components for the IVI platform. You will work across product, UX, and hardware teams to deliver reliable, high-performance services.

The role requires 8+ years in Android development, strong Java/Kotlin/C/C++, and deep Android internals knowledge. Hybrid work with on-site four days a week is available, with sponsorship and visa support.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of software development experience, particularly in Android development.
  • Strong proficiency in Java, Kotlin, and C/C++; Rust is a plus.
  • Deep understanding of Android OS internals, lifecycle management, services, and IPC (Binder).
  • Experience developing and integrating hardware abstraction layers (HAL) for HW-SW communication.
  • Familiarity with Android Interface Definition Language (AIDL) for IPC.
  • Proficient with Agile practices and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Ability to analyze and optimize system performance with a focus on user experience.

Responsibilities

  • Drive design and development of system-level components and libraries within the Android framework.

In this position... This position will focus on designing and implementing core components of the Android framework, enhancing the performance, reliability, and security of our IVI platform. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of Android's architecture and will thrive in a collaborative environment.

What you'll do...

You’ll have...
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • 8+ years of software development experience, particularly in Android development and AOSP-based platforms.
  • Strong expertise in Java, Kotlin, and C/C++; familiarity with Rust is a plus.
  • Deep understanding of Android OS internals, lifecycle management, services, and IPC methods (Binder).
  • Proven experience in developing and integrating hardware abstraction layers (HAL) to facilitate communication between hardware and software.
  • Familiarity with Android Interface Definition Language (AIDL) for defining and managing IPC mechanisms.
  • Proficient in using modern development tools and methodologies, including Agile practices and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Proven ability to analyze and optimize system performance while considering user experience.

This position is a leadership level 6 and ranges from $150,200-$283,500. Final determination of salary grade will be based on candidate's skills and experience, and base salary will be set within the applicable range according to job scope, responsibility and competitive market value.
