Job summary

General Motors seeks a Staff Software Engineer to lead AI-powered developer productivity across GM engineering tools and workflows. You will shape production-grade AI capabilities to help engineers build, test, analyze, troubleshoot, and support complex software systems at scale.

The role requires strong Python skills, 10+ years in software engineering or related fields, and experience applying AI/LLM approaches to engineering problems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering, developer tooling, platform engineering, ML engineering or related field.
  • Strong proficiency in Python and at least one other language used in engineering tooling; production software experience.
  • Experience applying AI/LLM approaches to engineering problems such as code analysis, workflow automation, or knowledge retrieval.
  • Knowledge of software fundamentals, system design, APIs, data flows, observability, and production operations.
  • Experience integrating AI capabilities into enterprise platforms, tools, or CI/CD systems.
  • Experience with cloud services, containerization, and orchestration technologies.
  • Strong emphasis on secure engineering practices and responsible AI guardrails.
  • Demonstrated success leading ambiguous, cross-functional efforts to production deployment.
  • Excellent communication skills to influence technical direction without formal authority.

Responsibilities

  • Define the technical vision for AI-powered developer productivity across engineering tools and workflows.
  • Design, develop, and deliver AI-powered solutions that reduce manual effort and accelerate issue resolution across development, debugging, test analysis, and documentation workflows.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to identify high-value AI use cases and translate them into scalable products and platforms.
  • Integrate AI capabilities into engineering tools and automation platforms to improve reliability and adoption.
  • Lead architecture and implementation decisions for AI systems spanning model access, orchestration, retrieval, evaluation, observability, security, and integration.
  • Drive productionization of AI capabilities within GM engineering environments including cloud-hosted services and CI/CD systems.
  • Establish technical standards and best practices for responsible AI use in engineering tools.
  • Mentor engineers on AI system design and workflow design without formal people-leader responsibilities.
  • Present strategy and progress to technical leaders and partner organizations.
