Job summary

McNair Interests is seeking a Staff Accountant, Investments to support the accounting department. You will assist with month-end investment accounting, prepare financial statements, reconcile investment activity, and maintain detailed investment schedules while ensuring accuracy and compliance.

The role requires a Bachelor's in Accounting with 2+ years of accounting experience; CPA/licensure and public accounting exposure are preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university is required.
  • Minimum of two (2) or more years of experience in accounting encompassing similar duties.
  • Public accounting firm experience and CPA license strongly preferred.
  • Investment accounting experience is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the month-end financial reporting process related to investment accounting, including preparing journal entries and account reconciliations.
  • Assist the Senior Accountant with the preparation of the financial statements including budget variance explanations.
  • Record and reconcile investment activity, including capital calls, contributions, distributions, and investment income.
  • Maintain detailed investment schedules, including cost basis, realized and unrealized gains/losses, and roll forwards by investment.
  • Assist with recording cash activity related to investments, including receipt of capital calls and distributions.
  • Prepare monthly accounting entries such as accruals, prepaid amortization entries, capitalization entries, etc. and other routine entries.
  • Review interest accrual estimates prepared by Treasury and prepare the corresponding interest expense journal entries.
  • Review bank reconciliations and ensure proper support is provided.
  • Prepare intercompany accounting entries and understand general department usage to properly code or complete accounting entries.
  • Understand and adhere to internal processes related to investment operations, including capital call funding and distribution processing.
  • Independently engage in research and correction of accounts receivable entries, particularly intercompany.
  • Provide the first layer of review for certain invoices in Avid.
  • Assist with audits and prepare workpapers for external audits.
  • Communicate any issues or problems encountered in a timely fashion.
  • Exhibit a level of skepticism when performing work and question abnormalities.
  • Understand process transition points to notify and engage other department members to continue various processes through completion.
  • Contribute by continuously bringing new ideas and initiatives that add value to the organization and improve the process in terms of both efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Ensure all routine processes are clearly and accurately documented using company standard operating procedure templates.
  • Provide assistance to other accounting team members as necessary.
  • Perform various other tasks as assigned.

Job description

The Staff Accountant, Investments, is responsible for assisting with various accounting department functions and preparing accurate and timely financial records for the organization.

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university is required.
  • Minimum of two (2) or more years of experience in accounting encompassing similar duties.
  • Public accounting firm experience and CPA license strongly preferred.
  • Investment accounting experience is strongly preferred.

Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:

  • Solid understanding and knowledge of GAAP principles and procedures.
  • Experience in maintaining a ledger and preparing financial statements. Experience with investment accounting (private equity, partnerships, etc.) is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to leverage technology to perform job functions at the highest level. This includes proficiency in Microsoft Word with advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel. Capabilities in other software such as MRI, Sage Intaact, Avid, Addepar and/or Advent APX software is a plus.
  • Self-initiative with the ability to work independently on multiple tasks with minimal oversight and effective time management skills enabling adherence to deadlines.
  • Ability to improve efficiency and effectiveness of existing processes.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to interact with employees, clients, fund managers, and partners with poise and diplomacy.
