Job summary

Fetzer Institute invites applications for a Staff Accountant to support month-end close, reporting, payroll backup, and cross-functional finance tasks. This full-time exempt position collaborates with the Sr.

Accounting Manager and Controller to maintain accuracy and drive continuous process improvements. You will handle day-to-day transactions, vendor management, and internal reporting while contributing to the organization’s mission and financial stewardship.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field preferred; relevant experience may substitute.
• 2+ years of progressive experience in accounting operations, accounts payable, or financial administration.
• Experience managing high-volume transactional workflows and multiple competing priorities.
• Knowledge of financial systems, payment platforms, and operational accounting processes; strong Excel skills.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy and process consistency.
• Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment in handling sensitive financial information.

Responsibilities

• Execute day-to-day financial transactions with accuracy and timeliness.
• Process journal entries, deposits, reconciliations, prepaid expenses, and fixed assets.
• Maintain organized financial records to support audits and continuity.
• Support month-end and year-end close through timely processing and reconciliation.
• Process accounts payable, disbursements, and payment workflows on schedule.
• Maintain vendor records, W-9s, and 1099 documentation; respond to vendor inquiries.
• Provide payroll backup and support quarterly tax filings and compliance activities.
• Support insurance renewals and coordination with the Sr. Accounting Manager and broker.
• Provide responsive staff support regarding financial transactions and procedures.
• Contribute to variance analysis, dashboards, budgeting, and forecasting schedules.
• Bridge transactional inputs and close/reconciliation outputs with strong internal controls.
