Job summary

NextDecade is seeking a Staff Accountant, Commodity Accounting to support LNG, natural gas and power transactions, ensuring accurate recording, settlements and monthly close. You will work closely with Commercial, Risk, FP&A and Treasury to ensure transactions are recorded, reported and settled accurately and on time, while building a strong foundation in energy accounting.

This role requires a bachelor’s degree in accounting, 2+ years in public accounting or equivalent experience, and CPA

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
  • 2+ years in public accounting (Big 4 or equivalent) or progressive accounting experience.
  • Experience and exposure to Oil and Gas industry, preferably in LNG.
  • CPA eligibility or progress toward CPA certification preferred.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Support the accounting and settlement of LNG, natural gas and power transactions.
  • Partner with Commercial, FP&A, Risk and Finance teams to understand transaction structures and their accounting impact.
  • Prepare, analyze and record accounting transactions, maintaining the accuracy, completeness and integrity of financial records.
  • Help ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP, company accounting policies and internal control requirements.
  • Contribute to monthly, quarterly and annual close activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations and supporting schedules.
  • Review transaction data and settlements to ensure accurate accounting and timely payment processing.
  • Build recurring and ad hoc reports for Accounting, Commercial, Treasury and management.
  • Support financial statement preparation and management reporting activities.
  • Assist with external and internal audit requests and maintain supporting documentation in accordance with company policies and controls.
  • Spot opportunities to improve processes and reporting and help bring those ideas to life alongside cross‑functional teams.
  • Get involved in system enhancements, and other special projects.

SUMMARY OF THE ROLE

The Staff Accountant, Commodity Accounting supports the accounting, settlement and reporting of LNG, natural gas and power transactions. This role maintains accurate transaction records, processes settlements, supports the monthly close process and contributes to financial and management reporting. You’ll work closely with Commercial, Risk, FP&A and Treasury to make sure transactions are recorded, reported and settled accurately and on time – and you’ll build a strong foundation of energy accounting expertise along the way.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
  • 2+ years in public accounting (Big 4 or equivalent) or progressive accounting experience.
  • Experience and exposure to Oil and Gas industry, preferably in LNG.
  • CPA eligibility or progress toward CPA certification preferred.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, organizational and communication skills.
  • High attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience with ERP systems, trading, settlement or accounting systems is a plus.
  • Curiosity, initiative and a desire to learn how global energy markets work.
Work Environment

This position operates in a professional office environment with occasional work within or outside of a complex construction environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers/fax, filing cabinets, etc. This is primarily a sedentary role; however, the incumbent must be able to stand and/or sit continuously to perform all essential job functions for a full shift. Able to meet the following physical demands of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations: Ability to lift up to 20 lbs. as required in order to lift files, boxes and office equipment as necessary. Ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bending, standing on a stool, or climbing as necessary to perform these functions. While performing the duties of this role, the incumbent may be required to talk or hear. The incumbent is required to stand, walk, use hands to handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Ability to move throughout all areas of each office/site location and facilities. Able to wear all necessary PPE equipment to perform job functions.
