Role Description

This is a full-time on-site role for a Staff Accountant located in New York, NY. The Staff Accountant will be responsible for day-to-day financial tasks, including preparing financial statements, reconciling accounts, processing invoices, and assisting with budget preparation and financial reporting.

Summary

The Staff Accountant is responsible for providing AGMA’s management with financial information for both AGMA and the AGMA Relief Fund by researching and analyzing accounts; preparing financial statements; monitoring policies and procedures; identifying and suggesting improvements for accounting reporting and recording procedures; and complying with federal, state, and local requirements. The Staff Accountant reports to and works closely with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in overseeing and performing day-to-day accounting/ finance functions. The Staff Accountant supports the Union by ensuring adherence to internal control policies and procedures as well as accounting best practices. This position will also work closely with other AGMA Union Teams, Membership, Operations, Immigration, Regional and National Teams.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

General Ledger Accounting and Related Duties

  • Execute Accounts payable and mange/track payments to vendors and record receipts.
  • Assist the CFO in reviewing and analyzing general ledger accounts, preparing the monthly GAAP financial statements for both AGMA and the AGMA Relief Fund and supporting schedules and proactively resolving inconsistencies under minimal supervision.
  • Take part in the month end close and associated tasks. Responsible for performing a portfolio of monthly and quarterly balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly actual versus budget report, along with detailed schedules.
  • Analyze information and options by developing spreadsheet reports, verifying information.
  • Prepare general ledger entries by maintaining records and files, reconciling accounts.
  • Prepare payments by accruing expenses, assigning account numbers, requesting disbursements and reconciling accounts. Scan all relevant supporting documents and attach them to QuickBooks.
  • Answer accounting and financial questions by researching and interpreting data.
  • Report on daily bank balances. Deposit and record checks/ electronic payments received from members, companies, visa consultations and other sources.
  • Record weekly payroll entries.
  • Maintain petty cash, when needed.
  • Issue annual 1099 forms to contractors and vendors.
  • Prepare ad hoc reporting as required.


Audit, LM-2, Form 990 and AD-Hoc Projects

  • Prepare year-end confirmation letters to the bank and other vendors.
  • Prepare and provide schedules for annual audit, responding to external auditor questions and providing requested information.
  • Calculate employer 401(k) annual contribution amount.
  • Will become proficient in AGMA’s membership software system, UnionWare. Assist in collections of member revenue, including taking credit card payments and assisting members.
  • Maintain cross-verification database for member revenue.
  • Prepare and maintain records for member dues refunds.
  • Participate in the annual budget and financial modeling.
  • Process and coordinate with the bank to change authorized signatories, as required.
  • Assist with payments of employee benefits and payroll activity.
  • Assist with the management of the National Headquarters Office
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business accounting, finance or equivalent.
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ specialized experience as a professional accountant or auditor.
  • Strong Understanding of GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles).
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks and Microsoft Office Suite, including spreadsheet experience.
  • Display ability to manage multiple tasks while working with minimal supervision and managing time effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Command a high degree of organizational skills, accuracy and attention to detail and workflow.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.


Working Conditions

  • Able to work occasional evenings and weekends, if necessary.


Compensation

  • Salary range is $80,000 – $95,000 and competitive benefits package.

  • Able to sit for extended periods of time.
