Job summary

Florida Gulf Coast University Foundation seeks a Staff Accountant to perform moderately complex professional accounting tasks for the Foundation finance office. You will reconcile accounts, prepare journal entries and review general ledger data to support financial statements.

The role requires a bachelor’s degree in accounting (or related field) with related full-time experience, strong Excel and Microsoft Office skills, and familiarity with GAAP/GASB standards in a higher-education context.

Qualifications

  • Requires either six years of directly related full-time experience or a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Accounting or closely related field and two years of related experience.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Knowledge of GAAP and GASB in higher education is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Reconciles assigned accounts and adjusts general ledger.
  • Prepares financial reports, balance sheets, budget reports, and summaries.
  • Analyzes accounting activities and communicates discrepancies for correction.
  • Audits transactions for compliance with university, foundation policies, and GAAP.
  • Oversees daily processing of revenue and expenditures for the department.
  • Creates and maintains spreadsheets/databases for supporting documentation.
  • Responds to accounting inquiries and researches transaction histories.
  • Suggests policies and controls to improve accounting operations.
  • Maintains daily/monthly/quarterly transactions and the Foundation’s card program.
  • Compiles and distributes monthly Foundation financial reports to university departments.

Job Description
Typical duties include but are not limited to:
  • Reconciles assigned accounts and/or accounting functions. Makes corrections and adjustments to the general ledger.
  • Prepares financial reports, balance sheets, budget reports, excel spreadsheets, and accounting summaries.
  • Performs detailed analyses of accounting activities. Identifies discrepancies and makes recommendations for correction.
  • Audits accounting transactions to ensure compliance with University and Foundation policies, federal and state regulations, and GAAP standards.
  • Oversees daily processing and accounting for revenue and expenditures for the department.
  • Creates and maintains spreadsheets or databases for supporting documentation, record keeping, auditing, and verification.
  • Responds to customer accounting questions and problems. Researches and analyzes the history of accounting transactions, performs queries, and generates supporting documentation.
  • Recommends policies, procedures and control systems to improve accounting operations.
  • Maintains and troubleshoots daily, monthly and quarterly transactions.
  • Reconciles and maintains the Foundation’s corporate card program.
  • Compiles and distributes monthly Foundation financial reports to University departments.

Required Qualifications:
  • This position requires either six years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Accounting or closely related field and two years of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
  • Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Accounting experience in a higher education and/or non-profit setting.
  • Experience with Workday Finance module.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience working effectively across teams.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) as they related to higher education accounting activities.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn Workday or similar enterprise financial management software application.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and complete simultaneous projects.
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with staff, faculty, students, and the community in a service-oriented environment.
  • Ability to work successfully as both a member of a team and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to take initiative to plan, organize, coordinate and perform work in various situations when numerous and competing demands are involved.
  • Ability to use effective decision making and problem solving techniques.
  • Ability to interpret and apply laws, regulations, policies and procedures consistently.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret financial data and prepare financial reports, statements, and projections.
