Job summary

Financial Center is seeking a Staff Accountant to support the Accounting Department in Indianapolis. The role requires coordinating daily workflows, assisting with budget and audit preparations, and maintaining fixed asset records, while improving processes across the team.

Qualifications

PURPOSE:

The primary purpose of this position is to fulfill Financial Center First CU’s vision of inspiring financial wellness. The position must deliver high-quality service to both internal and external members by supporting and promoting our values to Care, Listen, Learn, Solve, and Act.

The primary purpose of this position is to plan, coordinate, perform, and oversee various Accounting and Item Processing functions in a timely manner in order to maintain accurate Accounting records for the Credit Union. Assists the VP, Controller in various special projects as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Coordinates daily workflow amongst the accounting department to ensure timely posting of work.
  • Assists with: preparation of the Annual Budget, preparation of documents for auditors, preparation of quarterly Call Report, preparation of CECL calculation & analysis.
  • Works closely with all other Department Managers, Supervisory Committee Auditors, State & Federal Examiners, and any other authorized group, providing information as requested.
  • Maintains Fixed Asset Database and Prepaid Database. Coordinates Fixed Assets in Process with various departments to ensure the timely processing of the fixed asset database.
  • Coordinates testing of new processes, products, services, and systems as they relate to all Accounting processes.
  • Responsible for Dealer Premiums, including creating the ACH file.
  • Responsible for training/coaching and mentoring of Accounting Specialists on various new systems, processes, and functions as they evolve or change in the department. Contributes to the annual performance evaluation of the Accounting Specialists.
  • Responsible for creating, updating content, and ensuring compliance with procedures for all assigned tasks & processes.
  • Manages the annual BCP/BIA, works with Accounting Specialists, and ensures updates to the Accounting portions of the manual are completed.
  • Responsible for managing, assigning, or completing Accounting Department helpdesk requests.
  • Assists with performing and documenting annual department disaster recovery exercises.
  • Balances reports and creates postings for Participation Loans. Balances and maintains New Mortgage servicing.
  • Prepare forms and remit payment for quarterly Excess Share Insurance.
  • Responsible for: FCS Financials & posting of CU Elimination entries, Monthly FHLBI – Collateral File preparation and submission, Verifying Corporate Visa Postings, Journal entry verification, and Posting.
  • Administrator of Accounting systems and automated processes.
  • Responsible for accounting functions as it relates to the Financial Center’s bond portfolio.
  • Conducts research and stays up to date with industry trends and changes. Acquires knowledge of new processes, regulations, capabilities, etc.
  • Process informational and research requests for the credit union.
  • Responsible for Pre-close evaluation of various general ledger accounts and Pre-close preparation of various schedules and entries. Reconciles assigned general ledger accounts monthly.
  • Perform other duties commensurate with the position.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:
  • Education & Experience:
    • A bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent is preferred.
    • A minimum of three years of Financial Institution bookkeeping, accounting, or payment system processing experience, and familiarity with Credit Union member account processing is preferred.
  • Skills:
    • Strong desire and willingness to learn new technologies, processes, industry changes, and systems, etc. Accounting staff will be cross-trained to perform any of the Accounting department duties.
    • Able to work well under pressure and handle multiple deadlines. Is able to meet daily, monthly, quarterly, yearly, and other miscellaneous deadlines as required by law, regulators, policy, and management direction.
    • Thoroughly knowledgeable of credit union accounting procedures and GAAP.
    • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products such as Excel & Word.
    • Analytical and have the ability to solve various routine account problems.
    • Possess a general knowledge of accounting principles and practices.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal and customer service skills. Ability to be resourceful, perceptive, and persuasive when solving problems.
    • Displays diplomacy, patience, and tact when dealing with members and staff. Must have the ability to work accurately and neatly with figures and produce work in a timely manner.
    • Knowledgeable of Accounting procedures, Credit Union operating systems, and Credit Union Accounting systems within 90 days in the position.
    • Proficient in the use of computer systems or personal computers, computer-generated reports, a calculator, and other standard office equipment.
    • Able to maintain strict confidentiality of information. Must be detail-oriented and able to meet strict monthly deadlines.
Ada Requirements
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 15 lbs.
    • Must be capable of climbing and descending stairs in case of an emergency situation.
    • Proficient in operating routine office equipment, including telephone, copier, facsimile, and calculator.
    • Able to work on a computer for an average of 6-8 hours per day, as needed.
    • Willing to work extended hours or travel off-site whenever required or requested by management.
    • Must demonstrate regular, reliable, and timely attendance.
  • Working Conditions:
    • Able to routinely perform work indoors in a climate-controlled shared work environment with moderate noise.
