Job summary

Lake Erie College is seeking a part-time Stable Assistant to support the stable staff supervisor in day-to-day operations. Responsibilities include feeding, cleaning, and turnout coordination while maintaining safety with a variety of horses.

Ideal candidates will have solid horsemanship experience, the ability to lift 60 lbs or more, and the flexibility to work varied hours. A driver’s license and tractor experience are a plus, supporting team-driven institutional goals.

Responsibilities

• Daily cleaning of stalls.
• Feeding and watering horses; manage water buckets.
• Sweep aisles, wash racks, breezeways and entryways.
• Lift hay bales, bags of shavings and grain.
• Turnouts for various horses, including stallions and young horses.
• Assist with handling and grooming of horses; haltering and blanketing.
• Assist with veterinary, dental or farrier work as assigned.
• Show preparation and stable setup; bedding and equipment distribution.
• General stable cleaning and upkeep; wash walls and stalls.

Stable AssistantREPORTS TO: ASSOCIATE DEAN OF THE SCHOOL OF STREAMS & DEAN OF EQUINE STUDIESSTATUS: PART-TIME, NON-EXEMPT, HOURLYThe stable assistant acts as an overall assistant to the stable staff supervisor.RESPONSIBILITIES:Assists with general stable procedures, which include but are not limited to:Daily cleaning of stalls.Feeding and watering of horses, including removing ice and filling of water buckets.Sweeping of aisles, wash racks, breezeways and entryways.Lifting/moving bales of hay and bags of shavings and grain.Turnouts, including stallions and young and unpredictable horses.Handling a variety of horses safely and with confidence, including leading, grooming, pickinghooves, haltering horses and putting horse blankets on and off.Maintaining safety procedures when working with all horses.Assisting with/holding horses for veterinary, dentist or farrier work, as assigned.Show preparation, including set up of temp stalls, distribution of bedding, equipment andhorses, etc.Cleaning of the stable, including washing walls and stalls, removing cobwebs and generalcleaning.Performing any other tasks which the stable staff supervisor or dean deems necessary.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:Must have the ability to lift 60 lbs. or more.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & KEY COMPETENCIES:Experience in the above areas; good horsemanship skills required.Ability to work flexible hours.Shift options to be discussed during interview.Organization, dedication and the ability to communicate effectively and work independently.The desire to be a team player.Ability to work efficiently and effectively with coworkers and perform tasks as scheduled.Coursework in equine studies is a plus.Must have the ability to lift 60 lbs. or more.Must be able to drive a tractor and back wagons through barns.Growth and “doer” mindset and institutional teamwork ethic.Creative, strategic, thoughtful, and has a sense of humor.
