Job Description

The Sorter is responsible to the Store Manager, with the supervision of the Stores Director. The Sorter works within the framework of the St. Vincent de Paul Society's Mission and Thrift Store's objective. It is the responsibility of the Sorter to assist the Store Manager in meeting store objectives by receiving, pricing, ticketing, displaying and the transferring of merchandise. Also, the Sorter assures that the store's housekeeping duties are met on a daily basis.

Responsibilities:

  • Check clothing for quality, wear, and cleanliness (no rips, stains, broken zippers, missing buttons or loose threads).
  • Tag and hang clothing on hangers and move completed racks to staging area.
  • Check linens for cleanliness (no rips, stains, loose threads).
  • Sort, and pack shoes and accessory items for various stores, or for recycling.
  • Perform any tasks needed to keep work area neat and orderly/restock hanger supply as needed.
  • Follow designated procedure for employee purchases.
  • Keep manager or supervisor informed of problems and supplies needed to help the processing center run smoothly.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis and stand at workstation or hang clothes for 8 hours.
  • Knowledge of clothing, linen and accessory fashions, fabrics, styles and brand names, or willingness to learn and ability to do well after training.
  • Knowledge of household items and accessories or willingness to learn and ability to do well after training.
  • Learn and interpret policies relating to the store operation. Communicate effectively with fellow workers, staff and customers.
  • Ability to work in a team setting with other workers on the conveyor line.
  • Willingness to work cooperatively, in word and action, with other workers in stores and in the processing center.
  • Willingness to be flexible with job changes, willing to do other tasks when requested.
  • Ability to make speedy and accurate judgments of quality clothing, linens, accessories, and household items based on criteria information received during training.
  • A High School diploma or GED equivalent is preferred.
