Job description

Summary: The Music Director will collaborate with a team led by the Director of Evangelization to coordinate the music ministry program for St. Mary Parish. Under the leadership of the principal of St. Michael Catholic School, the director will instruct K-8 students in music and develop the music education curriculum at the school. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a willingness to partner with staff, faculty, students, and families to promote the Pastorate’s mission, vision, and goals.

Essential Duties
  1. Lead the music ministry at weekend liturgies (2 Sunday Masses) at St. Mary Parish, and coordinate music for holy days of obligation, weddings, funerals, and special occasions.

  2. Serve as the primary accompanist at each Mass, unless a proficient student or resident instrumentalist is available.

  3. Plan music for all Masses that is liturgically, musically, and pastoral appropriate.

  4. Develop and lead an adult choir and cantors.

  5. Develop and lead a children’s choir and cantors for the three Masses at St. Michael Catholic School.

  6. Prepare lesson plans and conduct classroom music instruction for grades PreK-8 in an enthusiastic and age-appropriate manner.

  7. Demonstrate classroom management and facilitation skills.

  8. Direct and accompany rehearsals, and hold additional rehearsals with individuals or groups as necessary.

  9. Engage with parents and parishioners, inviting them to participate in music ministry activities.

  10. Maintain the music ministry space, including the grand piano, pipe organ, and sound equipment, along with school music and sound equipment.

  11. Participate in pastorate and school events and activities as needed; be an engaged member of the three-parish staff.

Qualifications

Applicants must believe and uphold all teachings of the Catholic Church. To perform successfully, individuals must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.

  • Must be a Catholic in good standing.

  • Hold a B.A. in Music or equivalent professional experience; proficiency in piano, organ, and vocal/choral music is required.

  • Valid Indiana State certification or reciprocal licensure is preferred.

  • Experience leading music for Roman Catholic liturgies is required.

  • Experience teaching elementary school is preferred.

  • Experience working in a parish setting is ideal.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Flocknote, and current technology is preferred.
