From home
Be on the Front Line and help SSAFA Somerset make a difference for those in need. Our valuable Caseworkers help servicemen and women as well as veterans.
SSAFA Somerset assists with around 300 cases per year, split between 35 or so active caseworkers across the county. Cases vary enormously in both type and complexity, and we help servicemen and women as well as veterans of all three services and the Royal Marines. Following home visits, clients are individually managed by our caseworkers using an encrypted IT case management system (CMS), which is online to all service charities. Their needs range from the provision of wheelchairs and walk-in showers to help with mental health issues, family and debt problems, but sometimes it is a simple matter of signposting a client to specific Government departments to put them back on track.
It is worthwhile and very rewarding work. Prior to Covid-19 restrictions, volunteers were trained here in Somerset alongside experienced volunteers from the branch, or their division, before completing a 3-day course, the latter was normally residential and held at one of our national training locations. Due to Covid restrictions, it is now currently completed online. Similarly, induction training and any other courses needed are held online.
Reimbursement of costs
SSAFA is the UK's oldest national tri-service military charity. We exist to relieve need, suffering, and distress amongst the Armed Forces, veterans, and their families in order to support their independence and dignity.
