Job summary

Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility seeks an experienced vacuum systems specialist to support SRF cavities and accelerator facilities, covering low to ultra-high vacuum and particle-free assembly.

You will design, develop, and evaluate vacuum systems; coordinate integration; supervise staff; train teams; and maintain functional requirements and technical documentation, with emphasis on reliability, radiation hardness, and cleanroom techniques.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of relevant vacuum systems experience.
  • Experience supervising staff and managing performance.
  • Preferred: experience in large-scale accelerator projects.
  • Preferred: project leadership with cost and schedule responsibilities.
  • Preferred: cleanroom techniques and particle-free connections.
  • Preferred: thermo-mechanical modeling and data analysis.
  • Preferred: data collection and analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and evaluate vacuum systems and components, including integration procedures, vacuum loads, and pumping speeds.
  • Develop methods for particle-free assembly and surface cleaning of vacuum systems and superconducting cavities.
  • Develop methods to improve vacuum system efficiency and reliability, including radiation hardness.
  • Plan and coordinate integration and maintenance of vacuum systems.
  • Train staff on best-practice handling, assembly, and operation of vacuum systems.
  • Develop and maintain functional requirements and technical documentation for vacuum systems.

Job description

The good-faith pay range for this role is $91,800 - $131,900 per year. Actual compensation may vary and may be above the posted range based on factors such as a candidate's skills, experience, education, certifications, and work location.

What your job will be like:

Provide support for the development, operation, and improvement of all vacuum systems for superconducting (SRF) cavities and accelerator facilities, from low to ultra-high vacuum (UHV) and particulate free. Contribute to reliable implementation and operation for superconducting cavity development, CEBAF and other Jefferson Lab initiatives.

In this job you will:
  • Design, develop, and evaluate vacuum systems and its components, including procedures for integration and operation, calculate vacuum gas loads, pressure profiles, pumping speeds, safety features and utility requirements.
  • Develop methods for particle free assembly and surface cleaning of vacuum systems and superconducting cavities, including development of plasma processing methods.
  • Develop methods to improve vacuum system efficiency and reliability, including radiation hardness.
  • Plan and coordinate integration and maintenance of the vacuum systems.
  • Train staff on the best-practice handling, assembly, and operation of vacuum systems.
  • Develop and maintain functional requirements and technical documentation for vacuum systems.
Experience
  • Required: 10 or more years Relevant Experience And
  • Required: Experience supervising staff, setting and managing expectations, performance, and professional development.
  • Preferred: Experience in large-scale accelerator projects or facilities. And
  • Preferred: Experience in leading a project with cost and schedule responsibilities. And
  • Preferred: Use of cleanroom techniques and procedures. Methods for particle free connections. And
  • Preferred: Modelling and analysis tools for thermo-mechanical simulations. And
  • Preferred: Data collection and analysis.
Education
  • Required: Bachelor's Degree Engineering, Physics, or other related discipline
  • Preferred: Ph.D. Engineering or Physics
Experience and Education Exchange

Education above the minimum may be substituted for experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Can use mathematical methods including calculus and differential equations, to simulate pump-down curves, vacuum pressure profiles, and differential pumping schemes.
  • Able to work independently and in teams.
  • Able to effectively train people outside his/her work group.
  • Able to give effective presentations to critical/high level customers and effectively represent work group on review panels and cross-organizational teams.
  • Can write convincing proposals and reports with all necessary backup material for external consumption.
