Job summary

Backblaze seeks a Site Reliability Engineer III (DBA) to ensure the stability and reliability of production database systems, primarily Vitess (distributed MySQL) and Cassandra. You will shape runbooks, architecture, and DR plans, partnering with DBA/Data Infrastructure teams to enable scalable services.

The role emphasizes incident response, on-call rotations, automation, and strong collaboration across Eng/Operations to uphold service reliability at scale.

Qualifications

• 6–8 years in site reliability or related roles with database experience.
• Deep MySQL knowledge and distributed databases.
• Experience with Vitess in production.
• Experience with Cassandra.
• High-availability architectures, backup/DR.
• Strong SQL and performance tuning.
• Linux administration and scripting (Python/Bash/Go).
• Experience with Terraform, Ansible, Jenkins.
• Kubernetes and Docker experience.
• Experience in SaaS/cloud environments.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Design, deploy, and own highly available database architecture for Vitess and Cassandra.
• Document operational procedures, runbooks, and escalation guidance for junior SREs.
• Optimize database performance through query tuning and schema design.
• Own backup, recovery, replication, and DR strategies; test DR plans.
• Drive security, patching, hardening, and compliance.
• Develop automation for routine DB tasks; reduce toil.
• Collaborate on monitoring, logging, and alerting frameworks.
• Lead readiness reviews for new services entering production.
• Mentor engineers and help onboard new staff.
