Sr. to Sr. Staff Embedded Software Engineer - Battery Management Systems (BMS) - Autonomous Robotics
Location: San Francisco, CA (you can work from home up to 2x/week)
The team builds small, lightweight autonomous delivery drones with safety-first hardware designed to operate around people and everyday urban infrastructure. The work has a positive impact on the sustainability, access, and cost of everyday necessities.
You would be working in the company's office in San Francisco. You could work from home up to 2x/week.
You would be joining an elite group of about 60 people and 20 engineers inside a much larger public company. This org operates as a small, fast-moving hardware innovation lab: minimal bureaucracy, real build/test cycles, and ownership of systems that ship and operate at a very large scale.
In this position, you would be leading the development of embedded firmware for Battery Management Systems (BMS) and power electronics in advanced robotics products. You would be designing and implementing C/C++ firmware for ARM microcontrollers, including battery monitoring, charging, cell balancing, power distribution, and safety systems. You would own hardware bring-up, debugging, testing, and system integration, collaborating closely with electrical and power electronics engineers.
The company has a compensation range based on experience, with salary of $180k-$340k, plus RSUs translating into total first year compensation of $300k-800k.
Job Responsibilities:
- Owning the firmware development, bring-up, and integration of Battery Management Systems (BMS) and embedded power electronics platforms using ARM-based microcontrollers (e.g., Cortex-M series).
- Developing and maintaining bare-metal firmware and RTOS-based applications for battery monitoring, protection, charging, power management, and power distribution.
- Implementing battery management algorithms, including State of Charge (SOC), State of Health (SOH), cell balancing, thermal monitoring, and fault detection.
- Writing and maintaining robust, maintainable, and well-documented C/C++ code for embedded targets.
- Developing firmware interfaces for battery monitoring ICs, sensors, power converters, and other power electronics components.
- Collaborating with electrical and power electronics engineers on hardware bring-up, schematic review, and system integration.
- Leading system bring-up, validation, debugging, and testing of BMS firmware and power management subsystems.
- Contributing to firmware safety, reliability, fault handling, and system-level robustness.
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- At least 5 years of professional experience in embedded systems development, including significant experience developing embedded software for Battery Management Systems (BMS).
- Hands-on experience developing BMS firmware, including battery monitoring, protection, cell balancing, and battery state estimation.
- Deep expertise in bare-metal programming on ARM microcontrollers.
- Strong proficiency in C/C++ for embedded targets and firmware design patterns.
- Strong understanding of battery technologies, power electronics, and battery charging/discharging behavior.
- Experience with hardware bring-up and low-level debugging on custom boards.
- Solid understanding of digital electronics, communication buses (I2C, SPI, UART, CAN), and embedded peripherals.
- Strong system-level thinking, with an ability to work independently and take ownership across the full development cycle.
Nice to have:
- Experience with RTOS (e.g., FreeRTOS, Zephyr) or Embedded Linux on constrained systems.
- Experience developing BMS or power electronics firmware for robotics, electric vehicles, energy storage, or other battery-powered systems.
- Familiarity with DC/DC converters, charging systems, power distribution, and power electronics control.
- Experience working closely with hardware teams, reading schematics, and performing board-level debugging.
- Familiarity with functional safety, watchdogs, fault handling, and battery protection mechanisms.
- Experience with battery modeling, SOC/SOH estimation algorithms, and thermal management.
- Comfortable working in fast-paced, high-ownership engineering environments like those found in startups or advanced R&D teams.
