Technical Writer Location: Sterling Heights, MI Employment Type: Contract | Hours: 40 hrs/week, Mon–Fri Pay Range: $47.00/hour

About the Role We are seeking an experienced Technical Writer to create and revise complex technical documentation supporting the operation, maintenance, repair, and marketing of advanced defense products. You will work closely with engineering and cross-functional teams to translate complex technical information, drawings, and system requirements into clear, accurate documentation for a variety of users. This role offers the opportunity to support technical publications, Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs), and other documentation used in defense and military environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Create and revise complex technical documentation, including product descriptions, operating procedures, fault isolation procedures, maintenance and repair procedures, and Illustrated Parts Breakdowns (IPBs)
• Develop technical publications using modern publishing and XML authoring software
• Ensure documentation complies with customer requirements, government specifications, engineering standards, and applicable language standards
• Research technical systems and equipment and collaborate with engineering personnel to develop accurate documentation
• Analyze and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical data
• Translate complex engineering information into clear, understandable documentation for non-engineering audiences
• Evaluate and incorporate illustrations, graphics, and technical diagrams into documentation
• Coordinate the creation or revision of illustrations and graphics as needed
• Participate in documentation reviews, validation, and verification activities, including onsite and offsite assignments
• Support the development and testing of Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs)
• Provide input on document format, style, and overall publication design
• Assist with project planning by providing estimates for time and resource requirements
• Communicate with customers regarding project content and technical questions when required
• Lead small technical writing assignments or portions of larger projects
• Maintain current knowledge of industry practices, technologies, standards, and applications
• Maintain a safe work environment and follow applicable safety policies and procedures

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience, plus 5 additional years of relevant experience
• Experience creating technical documentation for mechanical, electrical, or operator systems
• Working knowledge of hydraulics, mechanics, electronics, and system operations
• Ability to understand complex engineering designs and interpret engineering drawings and technical terminology
• Strong command of the English language with excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines
• Experience with XML authoring tools such as Arbortext Epic Editor or Oxygen
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
• Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat Professional or similar electronic PDF markup software
• Ability to work effectively with diverse cross-functional teams across multiple locations
• Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
• U.S. Citizenship required for this U.S. Government contract

Preferred Qualifications

• Defense industry experience
• Experience developing Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs)
• Knowledge of IETM functionality, development processes, and markup languages
• Experience with Content Management Systems (CMS)
• On-vehicle validation and verification experience
• Experience working directly with customers in a technical environment
• Familiarity with relevant military and commercial standards
• Experience with Access or other database applications
• Specialized technical knowledge related to specific defense systems or equipment
