Job summary

Universal Health Services’ GW Hospital is seeking a Senior Surgical Tech to join the cardiovascular surgical team in Washington, DC. You will help maintain a sterile field, support the surgical team with complex cardiac procedures, and mentor junior techs in a high-acuity setting.

Ideal candidates have a CST credential, formal Surgical Technology training, and at least two years of open heart/cardiac experience, plus BLS. Excellent benefits accompany this on-site role at GW Hospital.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program.
  • Current CST credential.
  • Minimum 2 years of recent surgical tech experience, including open heart/cardiac surgery.
  • BLS certification (AHA).

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain the sterile operating field.
  • Assist surgeons during cardiac procedures by passing instruments and anticipating needs.
  • Operate and troubleshoot specialized surgical equipment.
  • Ensure proper handling and accountability of instruments and supplies.
  • Support and mentor junior surgical techs and staff training.
  • Adhere to infection control and patient safety protocols.
  • Document procedures and maintain accurate records.

Education

Certified Surgical Technologist (CST)

Senior Surgical Tech Role

As a Senior Surgical Tech you will play a vital role on the surgical team, assisting with complex cardiac procedures. You will ensure a sterile field, manage specialized instruments, and support the surgical team before, during, and after operations. Your experience and leadership will contribute to safe, efficient, and high-quality surgical outcomes in a high-acuity setting.



Main Tasks


  • Prepare and maintain the sterile operating field

  • Assist surgeons during cardiac procedures by passing instruments and anticipating needs

  • Operate and troubleshoot specialized surgical equipment

  • Ensure proper handling and accountability of surgical instruments and supplies

  • Support and mentor junior surgical techs and assist with staff training

  • Strictly adhere to infection control and patient safety protocols

  • Document procedures and maintain accurate records

Qualifications

Required:


  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program

  • Current Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential

  • Minimum 2 years of recent surgical tech experience, with experience in open heart or cardiac surgery required

  • BLS (AHA-certified)



Preferred:


  • Advanced cardiac surgery experience

  • Experience in mentoring or training staff
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree
