Job summary

Medtronic in the United States is seeking a lead engineer to design, develop, test, and document imaging system solutions that integrate hardware and software. You will drive system architecture, define use cases, and guide cross-functional teams to meet clinical and product requirements.

Qualifications

A Day in the Life
  • Work and lead within a cross‑functional team to design, develop, test, and document innovative imaging system solutions utilizing software and hardware components.
  • Lead the characterization and optimization of image quality performance at the system level, considering the interaction of imaging hardware, software, reconstruction, and image processing pipelines.
  • Collaborate across marketing, quality, software, hardware, and test teams to ensure the imaging chain meets product requirements and clinical use needs.
  • Lead the definition and development of user needs, business needs, use cases, requirements, and system architecture.
  • Lead the engineering analysis to optimize and select system‑level concepts to ensure the final solution fulfills needs, requirements, use cases, environments, and the overall system vision.
  • Plan and execute user evaluations in lab‑based surgical environments or other formative evaluation events to gain insightful feedback on system concepts.
  • Partner and collaborate with surgeons, surgical staff, hospital administrators, and Medtronic field teams to translate clinical and operational needs into solutions that integrate seamlessly into surgical practice and hospital systems – enhancing both usability and adoption.
  • Collaborate with core team/program leaders, Chief Engineers, product managers, R&T leaders to align technical decisions across platforms/portfolios, resolving integration and experience challenges and delivering solutions that feel cohesive and interconnected.
  • Lead teams in identifying and mitigating technical risks, product hazards, and failure modes.
  • Troubleshoot system component integration and support surgical procedure integration of the design.
  • Provide technical leadership along with computer‑assisted, robotic‑assisted, and clinical procedure subject matter expertise to internal and cross‑business development teams.
Nice to Have
  • Experience in the medical device industry and/or surgical techniques.
  • Experience with X‑ray imaging systems, including system performance characterization and image quality optimization.
  • Expertise analyzing end‑to‑end imaging pipelines, including detector behavior, acquisition, calibration, reconstruction, image processing, and display.
  • Expertise troubleshooting image quality artifacts and performance limitations in imaging systems.
  • Experience applying AI tools effectively, while exercising sound engineering judgment, technical accuracy, and appropriate review of outputs.
  • Expertise in leading cross‑functional or multi‑platform engineering activities across product definition, specification, test, and launch.
  • Experience in Systems Engineering as related to stakeholder needs definition, creation of use case workflows, requirements definition and decomposition, functional architecture, and system design.
  • Experience planning and conducting user evaluations of product concepts, analyzing data, documenting evaluation methods and results, and presenting design recommendations to product teams.
  • Experience with software design, algorithm design, GUI design, and iterative software development practices.
  • Familiarity and experience working with Matlab, Linux, C++, or scripting languages.
