Job summary

Medtronic is seeking a Technical Specialist to maintain and advance software products used in medical devices. You will work across desktop applications using C++, C#, WPF, and Qt, contributing to design, development, and testing while aligning with regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities include supporting the Technical Service group, providing technical leadership for the maintenance team, and applying Agile methods to manage software support tasks and project work.

Qualifications

  • Proficient in object-oriented software design for medical devices.
  • Experience with desktop software in regulated environments is a plus.
  • Strong debugging and code review skills.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and update existing medical software products, including End of Life issues and software updates.
  • Support Technical Service with complex customer issues requiring R&D skills and product knowledge.
  • Provide technical leadership for the maintenance team in solution design and project tasks.
  • Design, develop, and test software applications across multiple tech stacks (C++, C#, WPF, Qt).
  • Follow design processes, create design documents, and conduct design reviews for regulatory compliance.
  • Participate in Agile software development processes (Scrum).
  • Coordinate work with team members using strong written and verbal communication.

A Day in the Life

Day in the Life

  • Responsible for maintenance of existing software medical products, includes: addressing software component End of Life issues (developing and testing software updates), conducting periodic vulnerability scanning (publish reports, address issues as required), monitoring SBOM issues (ensure a product’s software bill of materials components are supported and working to specification, develop and test solutions as required)
  • Responsible for supporting Technical Service group, includes: providing solutions to challenging customer issues that require R&D skills and in-depth product knowledge
  • Provide technical leadership for product maintenance team in regards to solution designs, software development, and project task management
  • Support the maintenance and management of medical devices with software across multiple tech stacks: Desktop applications (C++, C#, WPF, Qt)
  • Utilize application design and object-oriented design patterns to design solutions
  • Utilize software development tools: Visual Studio, VS Code, Qt Creator, Rad Studio
  • Follow Design processes that include creating design documentation and conducting design reviews to support regulatory and business needs
  • Design, develop, conduct code reviews, debug, test software applications
  • Provide engineering support to all departments within the business software systems and utilities
  • Use Agile methodologies to manage software medical application support (i.e. SCRUM)
  • Manage completion of own work assignments and coordinates work with other team members utilizing strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Additional duties as assigned
Nice to Have
  • Experience in medical device industry (or other regulated industry)
  • Experience in mobile application and web application development

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Designs, develops, tests, debugs and implements operating systems components, software tools and utilities.
  • Determines systems software design requirements.
  • Ensures that system improvements are successfully implemented and monitored to increase efficiency.
  • Generates systems software engineering policies, standards and procedures.
  • May work across a variety of software lifecycle activities as determined by program needs.

TECHNICAL SPECIALIST CAREER STREAM: An individual contributor with responsibility in our technical functions to advance existing technology or introduce new technology and therapies. Formulates, delivers and/or manages projects assigned and works with other stakeholders to achieve desired results. May act as a mentor to colleagues or may direct the work of other lower level professionals. The majority of time is spent delivering R&D, systems or initiatives related to new technologies or therapies – from design to implementation - while adhering to policies, using specialized knowledge and skills.

Autonomy: Recognized expert, managing large projects or processes. Exercises considerable latitude in determining deliverables of assignments, with limited oversight from manager. Coaches, reviews and delegates work to lower level specialists.
