Job summary

Inalab is seeking a Sr. Systems Administrator to manage Windows Server and desktop support across a 300-workstation, 15-server enterprise. You will administer Active Directory, Hyper-V, and SCCM, while developing PowerShell scripts and ensuring system reliability.

Sr Systems Administrator (Windows and Desktop Support)

Job Title: Sr. Systems Administrator (Windows and Desktop Support)

Client: US Geological Survey (USGS) Geological Hazards Science Center (GHSC)

Citizenship: US or Green Card / Permanent Resident if Background Investigation passed

The candidate will work on system administration of all data center and enterprise architecture hardware and associated software, manage system replacement and upgrade projects, and Windows Server administration.

The candidate will participate in the monitoring, maintenance, and upgrade of systems to meet the needs of the GHSC as well as documentation of the systems. The candidate will provide specialized support and system administration on Windows Server machines, Windows Operating Systems, and user/desktop support. The candidate will participate in all phases of planning, system design, prototyping, development, testing, documentation, and software maintenance. The candidate will utilize agile approaches, to ensure consistency with the larger GHSC infrastructure and external community requirements.

The candidate’s main tasks include (but will not be limited to):

• Serve as a Tier-1 IT emergency responder providing phone and on-site support. Tracking tickets are entered, responded to, and/or closed as appropriate.
• Perform Windows Server and Windows OS System Administrator duties including, but not limited to:
• Install and configure new hardware and software.
• Monitor and review system logs and detect and troubleshoot problems.
• Write and maintain moderately complex scripts in PowerShell.
• Document the configuration of the systems.
• Establish and maintain suitable resource and performance monitoring on all systems.
• Provide user support for office environments. This includes setting up computers and monitors and configuring wiring and network cables so that they are neat and orderly.
• Develop and maintain procedures for applying patches to major subsystems and services, roles, and filesystem components within a Windows Systems environment and perform operating system and patch testing on all changes prior to installation.
• Ensure parity between dev, staging and production environments.
• Understand the applicable processes and procedures of the organization and make recommendations in the continuous improvement of those processes and procedures, providing for management analysis and recommendations on continuous improvement.
• Collaborate and partner with team members on technical projects.
• Research, procure, and implement new hardware and software solutions as required for geologic hazards research and operations which support the Program mission.
• Participate in planning of both short-term and long-term projects where problems or needs are defined, feasibility of proposals are evaluated, and workable solutions are developed to ensure that computing capabilities and infrastructure are sufficient to meet the needs of the science center’s evolving technology demands.
• Verbally report on progress during weekly meetings. Priorities and coordination of the work required will be discussed and milestones will be established as needed.
• At the conclusion of each task, demonstrate that the changes implemented work properly without detrimental impact on GHSC operations.
• Provide detailed documentation or update existing documentation regarding all aspects of the task.

Technologies/Certifications:

• Proven experience with Microsoft Active Directory, Hyper V server environment.
• Desktop/Client support with HP and Dell Equipment. Microsoft System Center Configuration management.
• Implementation and Support to administer physical and virtual servers in Microsoft HyperV environment.
• Administration of Microsoft Active Directory and Group Policy.
• Environment is approximately 300 workstations and 15 servers in secure environment.
• Ensure Federal guidelines are adhered to on all systems. Manage 100 clients via the enterprise bitlocker solution.
• Direct support of end users and applications in scientific environment with laboratory equipment.
• PostgreSQL 9.6 or higher, Solr/Lucene, Elasticsearch AWS RDS and MongoDB, Python, Linux, Windows, Git, CI/CD pipelines, Docker, ECS, EKS, NGINX, Apache, Tomcat, Traefik, Atlassian Suite (Jira, Service Desk), shell scripting, Terraform,
