SENIOR STRATEGIST

(On-site, 4 days a week, in Cheshire, CT)

THE ROLE

A Senior Strategist at Rebellion should be able to walk into a new brand, category, audience, or business problem, get smart quickly, separate signal from noise, and help the team decide what matters next. The work is broad by design. One day that may mean positioning a brand. The next it may mean mapping a communications ecosystem, building a content or social strategy, shaping a campaign brief, interpreting research, defining an audience, or helping a client figure out what problem they are actually trying to solve.

You’re not expected to be the narrow specialist in every discipline. You’re expected to understand how the pieces connect, ask better questions, bring a strong point of view, and make each discipline smarter. Your job is to turn understanding of people, markets, culture, business, and behavior into strategy that teams can actually use.

The goal is not strategy for strategy’s sake. The goal is clearer decisions, stronger ideas, more coherent experiences, and better marketing.

CORE PURPOSE
  • Create clarity when the brief, business problem, audience, or path forward is still fuzzy.
  • Bring the customer, audience, culture, category, and competitive context into the room — not as decoration, but as evidence that changes the work.
  • Translate research and information into a useful strategic interpretation: what is happening, why it matters, and what we should do about it.
  • Connect business strategy, brand, communications, content, social, creative, media, and experience so the work feels intentional rather than assembled.
  • Give clients and internal teams a direction they can understand, challenge, build from, and measure.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Understand the business, brand, and people
  • Learn a client’s business model, goals, category, market dynamics, competitors, customer realities, and internal pressures quickly.
  • Build a grounded understanding of audiences: motivations, behaviors, needs, barriers, perceptions, influences, culture, and context.
  • Interrogate research, data, stakeholder input, social signals, trend reports, and existing assumptions. Separate what is proven from what is directional or inferred.
  • Spot contradictions, tensions, patterns, unanswered questions, and opportunities that can unlock better decisions.
  • Stay connected to shifts in culture, media, platforms, technology, language, and behavior that may change how a brand should show up.
Build the strategy
  • Develop brand strategy, including positioning, purpose, value propositions, audience definition, brand architecture, messaging foundations, and experience principles when the project calls for it.
  • Create communications plans that define what we need people to think, feel, understand, or do, and how messages, moments, channels, and touchpoints should work together.
  • Develop content strategies that clarify the role of content, editorial territories, themes, formats, cadence, distribution, and the connection between ongoing content and larger brand goals.
  • Shape social media strategy around audience behavior, platform roles, cultural participation, community, content systems, and measurable objectives.
  • Develop campaign and creative strategy: frame the problem, identify the audience and insight, define the strategic proposition, and build briefs that give teams a useful springboard rather than a box.
  • Create strategic roadmaps, journeys, frameworks, and decision systems when they help turn ambiguity into movement.
Make strategy useful
  • Write briefs and strategic direction that creative, account, content, media, PR, production, development, and other partners can act on.
  • Participate in ideation and reviews to protect the strategic intent while leaving room for ideas to get better than the brief.
  • Pressure-test recommendations and creative work against the problem, audience, business objective, and desired behavior — not personal taste.
  • Help teams connect individual tactics to the larger brand and communications system so the work builds rather than fragments.
  • Define what success should look like and work with account, media, analytics, and client teams to connect strategy to measurement and learning.
Be a strategic partner to clients
  • Ask the questions that get beneath the request and clarify the actual problem or opportunity.
  • Present strategy in a way people can follow: build the logic, explain the meaning, make the implications clear, and invite useful discussion.
  • Bring proactive thinking to the relationship instead of waiting for a brief to tell us what to think about.
  • Build trust with day-to-day and senior client partners by being informed, candid, curious, and useful.
  • Recognize when a client need connects to another capability, project, or opportunity and help the agency respond intelligently.
Raise the strategic quality of the agency
  • Work across accounts and project types without becoming territorial about where strategy starts or stops.
  • Help account, creative, content, media, and other teams think strategically rather than treating strategy as something only a strategist does.
  • Contribute tools, frameworks, examples, training, and shared practices that make the agency’s thinking clearer and more consistent.
  • Bring a point of view to new business, pitches, workshops, thought leadership, and internal conversations when strategic thinking can make the work stronger.
  • Use AI and other tools to accelerate research, synthesis, exploration, and iteration — without outsourcing judgment, originality, or responsibility for the answer.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
  • Demonstrated experience in brand, marketing, communications, advertising, digital, content, social, research, or a related strategy discipline.
  • Someone who wants to collaborate in person. This is not a remote role.
  • The ability to move between business problems, audience understanding, brand thinking, communications, content, and channel strategy rather than operating in one narrow lane.
  • Strong research and synthesis skills, including the ability to distinguish evidence from assumption and turn information into a coherent point of view.
  • A strong grasp of how brands are built and experienced across paid, owned, earned, social, digital, physical, and human touchpoints.
  • Excellent writing, briefing, storytelling, facilitation, and presentation skills.
  • Confidence working directly with clients and cross-functional teams, including senior stakeholders when appropriate.
  • A habit of following culture, behavior, media, technology, and marketing because you are genuinely interested in how people and markets change.
  • Good judgment. We value frameworks and process, but the job ultimately requires a human being who can think.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
  • Teams know what problem they are solving, who they are solving it for, and why the chosen direction makes sense.
  • The strategy can be seen in the final work. It does not disappear once the deck is approved.
  • Clients increasingly pull Rebellion into the problem earlier because they trust the quality of the thinking, not only the execution.
  • Briefs get sharper, conversations get more useful, and decisions get easier because the important information has been clarified.
  • You can move between brands and project types without needing the role to be redefined around you.Teams know what problem they are solving, who they are solving it for, and why the chosen direction makes sense.

  • You consistently surface insights, opportunities, risks, and connections that the team or client would have missed otherwise.
  • Creative, content, media, social, account, and other disciplines feel better informed and better equipped — not dictated to.
  • Your work creates momentum: clearer direction, stronger collaboration, fewer avoidable loops, and better outcomes.
