Salary Range: $243,750 - $406,250

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $243,750-$406,250 plus bonus eligibility and other elements of our total rewards package. The range represents the amount BNSF | Tech reasonably expects to pay for the position based on the role's level, scope, and responsibilities. Individual compensation will be determined by the hiring location and factors including skills, experience, and education. In addition to base pay, BNSF offers a comprehensive benefits package.

We seek an experienced Senior Infrastructure Engineer to design, lead, and scale modern infrastructure systems in a hybrid cloud environment, emphasizing open-source HCI and SDN technologies. This role will lead platform engineering initiatives and coordinate between infrastructure, platform, and SRE teams to ensure performance, scalability, and operational excellence.

The ideal candidate will have deep technical expertise, a passion for open-source tech, and leadership experience in distributed, cloud-native, and hybrid environments.

As a Senior Infrastructure Engineer, you will:

1. Architect and lead infrastructure strategies across compute, storage, and networking using open-source tools and cloud-native practices.
2. Design and implement open-source HCI platforms (e.g., Proxmox VE, OpenStack, Ceph) and SDN stacks (e.g., Open vSwitch, FRR).
3. Mentor platform engineering teams to build reusable infrastructure layers, internal developer platforms, and automation frameworks.
4. Partner with SREs to implement observability, reliability, and autoscaling.
5. Promote Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) using Terraform, Ansible, or similar tools.
6. Establish architectural standards, security policies, and disaster recovery plans.
7. Lead hybrid infrastructure transformation and modernization projects.
8. Collaborate with DevOps, Security, and Application teams for cohesive platform delivery.
9. Contribute to open-source communities and guide emerging technology adoption.

Basic Qualifications

• Authorized to work in the US.
• At least 2+ years in infrastructure or platform engineering, with technical leadership or architecture experience.
• Proven experience with large-scale infrastructure design and implementation, including:
• Open-source HCI (e.g., Proxmox, OpenStack, Ceph)
• SDN technologies (e.g., Open vSwitch, Calico)
• Linux, virtualization, networking protocols, distributed storage expertise.
• Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code, CI/CD, container orchestration (Kubernetes).
• Ability to define strategies and lead cross-functional initiatives.
• Experience in DevOps/SRE environments focusing on reliability and observability.
• Scripting skills in Go, Python, Bash, PowerShell.
• Experience with multi-cloud and hybrid environments.

Preferred Qualifications

• Will not require future assistance from BNSF for employment authorization (e.g., H-1B, TN).
• Experience in transportation industries (Rail, Shipping, Logistics).
• Open-source project contributions or leadership.
• Certifications such as AWS, Azure, GCP, RHCSA, Security+, CKA, CKAD.
• Experience building PaaS or Internal Developer Platforms.
• Knowledge of Zero Trust security models.
