Job summary

Hinge Health is seeking a Backend Software Engineer to build scalable, secure identity and accounts systems using Golang and gRPC.

You will collaborate across product and design teams, work in a DevOps culture, and contribute to an AI-enabled care platform. They value cross-functional collaboration and secure, high-quality systems in production.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering or related field.
• 3+ years of non-internship full time professional software development experience.

We are looking for a Backend Software Engineer who is passionate about creating exceptional user experiences using Golang, gRPC based micro‑services. As a member of the Accounts team, you will help build and shape new improved experiences with impact across the whole company. A resilient and scalable Accounts system ensures both stability and helps with growth of our member base. This role has a strong focus on user identity and account management — registration, authentication, authorization, and identity provider integrations — so hands‑on experience with identity management platforms (e.g., Auth0, Okta) and IAM concepts (SSO, OIDC, SAML, MFA/passwordless auth) is highly valued. You’ll work closely with product managers, designers, and backend engineers to build scalable, performant, and accessible applications. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a high‑impact product in its early stages. You’ll play a key role in defining the technical foundations and ensuring a seamless and delightful experience for users. The ideal candidate thrives in cross‑functional collaboration, is comfortable with ambiguity, and cares deeply about product quality and user experience. Backend engineers at Hinge Health contribute to their team’s success by architecting and implementing end‑to‑end solutions, well‑tested performant APIs and data models. In addition, candidates will profile their systems to stay out ahead of scaling bottlenecks, and help maintain a high bar with thoughtful and constructive code reviews. We enjoy a continuous deployment DevOps culture, and take owner‑operator pride in supporting our code in production. Our production systems rely on Golang, gRPC, AWS, Postgres, Redis, and temporal. Our workflow is trunk‑based CI/CD, and our security/compliance posture is at the highest standards of healthcare, including HIPAA, HITRUST, SOC 2, and CCPA.

What You’ll Accomplish

• Deliver large projects that introduce new product capabilities, often acting as a maintainer for key code repositories.
• Design, build, and operate identity and account management systems — member registration and sign‑in workflows, OTP/MFA verification, social login, account linking, and identity provider (e.g., Auth0) integrations.
• Break down complex problems into manageable tasks, ensuring steady and predictable delivery while identifying and resolving root causes of incidents.
• Collaborate with your team to roadmap and execute ambitious technical strategies, balancing short‑term and long‑term trade‑offs.
• Mentor and support junior engineers, providing thoughtful code reviews and real‑time pairing.
• Integrate and leverage AI technologies to automate processes and enhance product features, contributing to Hinge Health’s AI‑driven care platform.
• Proactively improve the maintainability, availability, and performance of the team’s features, and contribute to the team’s overall architecture and developer tooling.
• Communicate technical ideas clearly to both technical and non‑technical partners, and document solutions for future reference.
• Participate in the team’s weekly on‑call rotation, helping ensure the reliability and timely support of the systems we build.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering or related technical field
• 3+ years of non‑internship full time professional software development experience
• Experience with at least one software programming language
• Experience in the full software development life cycle
• Experience delivering large software projects or features in a production environmentProficiency in at least one modern programming language (e.g., Golang, Python, Java, JavaScript, etc.)
• Good understanding and practical knowledge in cloud based services (e.g. gRPC, protobufs, temporal, Docker/Kubernetes, cloud services such as AWS, etc.)
• Experience building or maintaining user identity, authentication, or account management systems (e.g., registration, sign‑in, credential/identity linking, role‑based authorization)
• Hands‑on experience with an identity provider platform such as Auth0, Okta, or similar (OIDC, SAML, SSO, passwordless or social authentication, IdP management/authentication APIs)
• Experience with data ingestion, integration and security is a plus

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Auth0 specifically — Management/Authentication APIs, Organizations, event streams or tenant/connection configuration — or comparable IdP depth
• Familiarity with identity and access management (IAM) concepts: multi‑factor authentication, entity resolution/deduplication for user or member records, and credential lifecycle management
• Experience with Temporal (or similar durable workflow engines) for orchestrating user lifecycle operations such as registration, bootstrapping, or invitations
• Experience with AI technologies for software design and coding assistance
• Experience mentoring or onboarding junior engineers
• Familiarity with distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, or scalable architectures
• Experience with healthcare technology or regulated environments
• Experience with Agile development practices

Employees in hybrid roles are required to be in the office 3 days per week, for the full 8 hours of a typical business day. The San Francisco office has a dog‑friendly workplace program.
