Job description

Our people enjoy solving interesting technical challenges in a culture where everyone trusts each other to do the right thing. For you, working with us can mean deeper job satisfaction, better rewards, and a great quality of life inside and outside of work.

Job Title: Sr. Software Engineer Reporting To: Management, Design Engineering Work Schedule: Onsite – Phoenix, AZ

Mission & Impact

At Moog we design and manufacture innovative systems and components for commercial and government spacecraft, missiles, and launch vehicles. For future space missions, Moog is investing in next-generation orbital maneuvering vehicles, radiation-hardened avionics, propulsion test facilities, and metal additive manufacturing. Join a team that designs, develops, tests, and maintains the specialized hardware, and systems used to support and validate spacecraft avionics, or launch vehicles on the ground. If you bring strong hardware and software experience to the test engineering design process and enjoy the challenge of solving complex problems, we would welcome, you to apply. See your work directly contribute to mission readiness and customer success.

What You’ll Do
  • Lead Projects: Own the end-to-end testing strategy, planning, and execution for complex electrical systems.
  • Design Test Systems: Architect custom test fixtures, test benches, or PCB-level interfaces to evaluate devices under test (DUT).
  • Define Requirements and Scope
  • Analyze the DUT (Device Under Test): Study product specifications, interfaces, and functional requirements.
  • Identify Measurements: List all parameters, signals, and performance metrics that need testing, along with the required measurement accuracy and tolerance. Avoid over-designing accuracy relative to the product itself.
  • Set Constraints & Budget: Establish the financial budget, development timeline, and operational footprint (e.g., rack-mount vs. benchtop).
  • Design the Test Strategy and Architecture: Determine Test Levels: Decide how testing breaks down into unit, integration, and system-level validation.
  • Select Instrumentation: Choose analog and digital instruments (such as DMMs, oscilloscopes, or RF analyzers) based on bandwidth, resolution, and bus architectures like PXI, USB, or Ethernet.
  • Plan Switching and Fixturing: Design mechanical interfaces, mass interconnect systems, or custom test fixtures to route signals safely between the DUT and your instruments.
  • Plan Hardware and Software Abstraction Layers: Use hardware and measurement abstraction layers so device-specific driver code is decoupled from your main test sequences.
  • Performance Measurement & Validation: Collect quantified test data, log failure modes, and build documentation packages.
  • Schematic & Fixture Design: Draft test systems or harness layouts using tools like Visio or Excel. Ability to read, interpret, and trace the technical blueprints of a printed circuit board (PCB).
  • Document Metadata: Title, unique ID, version, revision history, and stakeholder sign-off approvals.
  • Teamcenter: Comprehensive Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software platform that acts as a single, centralized "source of truth" for managing a product's entire journey—from initial concept and design through manufacturing, service, and retirement.
  • Perforce: Version control system designed to track file changes, manage source code, and handle massive binary assets at a large scale.
  • Jira: Versatile work tracking, issue-tracking, and project management tool.
  • Confluence: Team workspace and knowledge management platform.
  • Theme / Problem Statement: Clearly define what is wrong or needs improvement.
  • Process Improvement: Analyze large data sets, refine test coverage, and upgrade testing methodologies or compliance workflows.
  • Mentor and Review: Guide junior engineers, review test plans, and perform code or design reviews.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work directly with design engineers, software developers, and external stakeholders to prevent systemic quality risks.
Must‑Have Qualifications (Core)
  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience, or an Advanced degree in a related field and minimum 3 years' experience.
  • Experience in developing and integrating software applications using programming languages including but not limited to C, Perl, Python or LabView.
  • Experience in utilizing integrated development environments and debugging tools to troubleshoot software implementation and ensure integrity of the software products.
  • U.S. person (due to export‑controlled work).
Nice‑to‑Have (We Will Train Where Needed)
  • Familiarity with VxWorks.
  • Experience with cPCI architecture.
  • Experience controlling electronic loads, DC power supplies, MUX’s, o-scopes and other measurement instruments.
  • Understanding of conductor materials, shielding, connectors, and grounding techniques used in cable design.
  • Experience with thermal chambers, vibration tables or vacuum chambers.
Growth & Development
  • Structured onboarding with mentorship and exposure to multiple spacecraft programs.
  • Targeted training on Moog‑specific tools/architectures (Intercept Mozaix, EPS power switching) and advanced LabVIEW frameworks.
  • Clear technical progression toward lead/architect EGSE roles and mentoring responsibilities.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Annual bonus eligibility, profit sharing, 401(k) match, open/flexible PTO, and comprehensive medical/dental/vision.
  • 9/80 schedule (every other Friday off) and relocation assistance available.
