Primary Purpose

A Registered Nurse (RN) with 2 or more years of experience. The RN is a licensed professional who uses the Parkland nursing professional practice model to coordinate patient care delivery, focusing on specific patient populations or health conditions, by the healthcare team. Using the nursing process, the RN assesses patients, identifies diagnoses, develops and implements individualized care plans, and evaluates responses. The RN helps patients transition through healthcare encounters without preventable complications or delays, delegating interventions based on the Texas Nursing Practice Act, patient condition, and employee competencies.

Job Summary:
  • Serves as patient advocate, focusing on patient needs, rights, confidentiality, and cultural preferences. Maintains positive relationships with all internal and external customers.
  • Acts as a nursing resource for registered nurses, physicians, and residents caring for patients who have experienced violence.
  • Provides educational information on forensic specimen collection, medication treatment, and discharge planning to affected patients and families.
  • Participates in information exchanges with law enforcement, legal entities, and other agencies; may testify in court as an expert or fact witness.
  • Practices as a sexual assault nurse examiner according to established standards and guidelines, including the Texas Nurse Practice Act and organizational policies.
  • Completes documentation accurately and timely, maintaining compliance with standards and policies.
  • Mentors and trains new forensic nurses.
  • Engages in quality assurance and professional development activities.
  • Stays updated with advancements in forensic nursing through seminars, journals, and professional organizations.
  • Identifies process improvements and enhances customer satisfaction, implementing and monitoring changes.
  • Maintains knowledge of applicable laws, policies, and regulations, developing controls to ensure compliance.
  • Performs any other duties as deemed competent.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • BSN Degree from an accredited nursing school.
  • Current/Valid Texas RN license or valid temporary permit; or a valid Compact RN license in good standing.
  • At least two (2) years of recent RN clinical experience in forensic nursing, emergency, trauma, or ICU/CCU settings (clinicals/internships/LVN experience do not substitute).
Certification/Registration/Licensure:

All certifications must be valid for at least 30 days beyond the start date.

  • Current/Valid BLS certification from AHA, Red Cross, or Military Training Network.
  • Certification as an Adult/Adolescent Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner from the Texas Office of the Attorney General or the International Association of Forensic Nurses, or proof of active enrollment with certification expected within six months.
  • Additional specialty certifications may be required.
