Job summary

Tandem Diabetes Care is seeking a Sr. Project Manager to drive design and commercialization of key products. You will coordinate cross-functional teams across engineering, marketing, manufacturing, RA/QA, and product management to schedule projects, ensure timely launches, and report on progress across multiple initiatives.

The role emphasizes design controls, process improvements, and end-to-end lifecycle management, with a strong focus on compliance and stakeholder communication.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent training.
  • PMP certification desirable.
  • Experience in FDA-regulated medical device industry is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Provides project management expertise and leadership to a multi-functional core team from Concept through Commercialization.
  • Establishes project plans, cost analysis, schedules, and budgets; manages resources and progress reporting.
  • Coordinates with Product Management, Program Managers, and functional heads to resolve resource conflicts and ensure on-time delivery.
  • Ensures efficient transfer of product from R&D to manufacturing and external marketing.
  • Leads/process improvements related to product development, resource management, and design controls.
  • Communicates status updates to executive leadership and ensures compliance with Privacy/HIPAA and regulatory requirements.

A DAY IN THE LIFE:

The Sr. Project Manager manages the design and commercialization aspects of key products with responsibility for driving collaboration of cross-functional product commercial teams. Acts as the internal liaison between engineering, marketing, manufacturing, RA/QA, and product management for the purpose of scheduling projects, driving the timely launch of projects, budgeting resources, and reporting on the progress of several projects that are simultaneously being prepared for commercialization. Acts as a key facilitator in Tandem Product Commercialization Process including facilitation of corporate Phase Review Discipline meetings and progress tracking with the Tandem governance meetings. The Sr. Project Manager is also expected to lead or participate in product development continuous improvement projects led by the PMO.

Sr. Project Manager's at Tandem are also responsible for:

  • Provides project management expertise and leadership to a multi-functional core team from Concept through Commercialization following Tandem’s standard process for product development and/or design change; ensures implementation and compliance to Design Control procedures and improvements of systems, procedures, and documentation when appropriate.
  • Plans and directs all aspects of software/systems projects. Establishes project plans and objectives, develops project cost analysis, establishes, and manages the project schedule and budget, manages resources, tracks progress, and provides updates to management.
  • Works closely with the Product Management, Program Managers, and functional heads to resolve resource allocation issues, conflicts, and priorities and to ensure projects are staffed appropriately, completed on time, and within budget constraints.
  • Ensures efficient transfer of product from R&D to manufacturing and external marketing.
  • Leads/participate in process improvement initiatives related to product development, resource management and allocation, design controls, and other areas that impact cycle time, efficiencies, and compliance in medical device product development.
  • Communicates and presents regular and timely project status updates to various levels of the organization including the executive management team.
  • Ensures compliance with company policies, including Privacy/HIPAA, and other legal and regulatory requirements.
WHEN & WHERE YOU’LL WORK:

Remote: This position is fully remote and open to candidates within the United States. Equipment for the role will be provided and training will occur virtually.

Hybrid: This role will be a mix of in-office work at our corporate headquarters in Del Mar, CA and remote work. This position is expected to be in office 2 days per week but may vary depending on business demands.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
  • Matrix Cross-Collaboration: Navigate complex, cross-functional matrix environments by building strong spheres of influence across both vertical and functional organizational structures.
  • Upward Stakeholder Management: Communicate effectively with leadership to secure project resources, protect project scope, and manage escalations gracefully.
  • Team Motivation & Focus: Keep project teams aligned, highly motivated, and focused on meeting deadlines in agile, fast-paced environments.
  • Schedule & Lifecycle Execution: Manage end-to-end project schedules, milestone tracking, and Software Development Lifecycles (SDLC) from roadmap planning to post-production launches.
  • Agile/Scrum Expertise: Lead daily operations using agile frameworks, leveraging relative estimation, scrum ceremonies, velocity tracking, and core product metrics.
  • Advanced PM Tools: Utilize Jira, Confluence, and MS Project for work breakdown, planning, task estimation, and cross-team collaboration.
  • Change & Risk Management: Create and execute project change assessments, integrate change plans, and proactively mitigate risks.
  • Professional Representation: Act as a persuasive advocate and professional representative for the company at external business functions while maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Continuous Industry Improvement: Drive team-wide adoption of best practices while staying current with changing trends, regulations, and products within the medical device industry.
  • Technical & Engineering Literacy: Apply a foundational understanding of DevOps, CI/CD, SaaS, Business Intelligence, and general engineering principles to enhance customer value.
EXTRA AWESOME:

Requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent training; or a combination of education and applicable experience.

Certificate in Project Management (PMP) is desired. Alternatively, should be willing to pursue professional certification in the future.

Scrum/ SAFe Certification and/or CSM (Certified Scrum Master) a plus.

2 years’ experience managing projects; Software, Medical device industry, FDA-regulated, and ISO 14971 certified industry preferred.

Experience in managing projects from inception to post-market sustaining using a phase-gate/agile methodology.

Experience managing multiple projects at a time is a plus.

Experience in managing projects focused on solutions for people with diabetes a plus.

Knowledge and experience in web applications or Cloud software a plus.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

The starting base pay range for this position is $95,000 - $113,000 annually. Base pay will vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and may also fluctuate depending on candidate’s location and the overall job market. In addition to base pay, Tandem offers a competitive compensation package that includes bonus and a robust benefits package.
