Responsible for interpreting, organizing and executing the conceptual design of a project. Utilizes creativity, foresight and judgment to meet project requirements and objectives to carry out design.
What You’ll Do
- Lead overall design direction and shape the conceptual vision for one or more projects from early exploration through design development.
- Develop and advance architectural design concepts, ensuring work reflects HOK’s high standards of innovation, sustainability, and technical rigor.
- Collaborate with project architects, managers, and consultants to translate design intent into coordinated construction documents.
- Prepare and deliver compelling design presentations, communicating ideas with clarity and storytelling that inspire clients and stakeholders.
- Coordinate with agencies and regulatory bodies, ensuring alignment between design excellence and compliance requirements.
- Partner closely with the Senior Project Manager and Senior Project Architect to support seamless project delivery, strong team communication, and responsible financial performance.
- Champion sustainable thinking, integrating environmental responsibility as an essential component of design quality.
Responsibilities
- Conduct programming efforts such as space planning, layout, and utilization of furnishings and equipment, lighting and color coordination.
- Develop innovative design concepts that are practical, aesthetic, safe and conducive to intended purposes, reflecting client goals and staying within project budget.
- Coordinate color and material palettes.
- Select and specify furniture, lighting, flooring, wall covering and artwork; estimate material requirements and preliminary costs.
- Incorporate Integrated Sustainable Design solutions into projects.
- Render conceptual design ideas and prepare 2D and 3D presentation/design drawings.
- Prepare and conduct client presentations.
- Prepare, correct and update documents during schematic design and design development phases.
- Solicit bids and assist Project Manager and client in subcontracting fabrication, installation, and arrangement of the materials, finishes, and furnishings required.
- Ensure the project, or a phase of a project, remains on schedule.
- Communicate with other disciplines, vendors, and contractors to ensure incorporation of all information into project requirements and provide support as needed.
- Support the Construction Administration phase by responding to RFIs, COs, and reviewing shop drawings.
- Implement and utilize HOK Standards for all projects and processes.
- Provide support to all team members for specific field, style, or phase of interior design expertise.
- Mentor and direct the work of less experienced staff and deliver staff performance evaluations.
- Participate in interviews and recruiting of professional staff.
- Takes personal responsibility for fostering a green workplace through sustainable work practices.
- Fosters a commitment to external and internal client service.
Education & Experience
- Requires a Bachelor’s degree in architecture, interior design or a foreign equivalent.
- 10 plus years of experience in interior projects required.
- Must be a professional Interior Designer and have passed the NCIDQ exam or be a registered Architect with a current license.
- If registered architect, NCARB registration preferred.
- LEED accreditation or Green Associate preferred.

Compensation is based on experience, qualifications, education, and location. The reasonably expected salary range for this position is $130,000 to $160,000. Other compensation may include a discretionary bonus.
