Build the machines behind automation.

As our Senior Project Engineer with our Automation Group, you’ll manage outsourced mechanical design projects from concept through completion while providing technical direction and design oversight. You will use your engineering and machine design experience to review and approve mechanical designs, support internal engineering projects, and make design updates as needed. You will guide our design partners and internal engineering, controls, robotics and machine-build teams, you’ll help ensure projects deliver complete, buildable designs that meet customer requirements and AutoMatrix standards. You will make a difference.

You’ll work on a variety of automation equipment, including robotic cells, weld fixtures, end-of-arm tooling, press tooling, guarding and special machines. You’ll work closely with controls, robotics, project management, fabrication and machine build to make sure the mechanical design works not just on paper, but in the real world.

What You'll Do

  • Manage outsourced mechanical design projects from kickoff through design release, build support, revisions and as-built documentation. Define project requirements, coordinate resources, monitor schedules and quality, and hold outside design partners accountable.
  • Provide technical direction and approve designs, leading design reviews and evaluating SolidWorks models, assemblies, drawings, BOMs and calculations for functionality, safety, manufacturability, maintainability and compliance with project and company standards.
  • Create and revise mechanical designs in SolidWorks for automation equipment, including robotic cells, weld fixtures, EOAT, tooling, guarding and special machines. Make small to moderate updates after release and support engineering changes, troubleshooting, machine build, debug and customer run-off.
  • Work across mechanical, controls, robotics and manufacturing disciplines to resolve design and integration issues, including pneumatics, linear motion, actuators, sensors, machine safety and operator access.
  • Identify project risks and design issues early, communicate effectively with customers, suppliers and internal teams, and continuously improve mechanical design standards, checklists, templates and SolidWorks libraries.

This Role May Be For You If…

  • You enjoy designing equipment that actually gets built and put to work.
  • You have strong SolidWorks skills and understand what makes a mechanical design functional, buildable and maintainable.
  • You enjoy solving problems where mechanical design, robotics, controls and manufacturing come together.
  • You’re comfortable taking ownership, providing technical direction and keeping projects moving.
  • You like variety and want to see your designs go from a computer screen to a functioning machine.

What You'll Bring

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, mechanical engineering technology or equivalent experience.
  • Strong proficiency in SolidWorks and mechanical design best practices.
  • Knowledge of industrial automation, robotics, tooling, manufacturing processes and machine safety standards.
  • Strong engineering judgment with the ability to evaluate designs for functionality, manufacturability and integration.
  • Ability to manage priorities, collaborate across teams and effectively work with outside design resources.
