Job summary

Impellam Group is seeking a Senior Project Controls Specialist to support Major Projects for a leading utility client in Charlotte, NC. The role focuses on integrating cost, schedule, and risk reporting to drive informed decisions and accountable project delivery from planning through execution.

The SrPCS will lead reporting, apply advanced project controls methods, and partner with estimators and analysts to establish robust baselines.

Qualifications

  • 4-year degree in business, finance, project management, engineering, technical field, or equivalent, plus 5+ years of prior work‑related experience; OR 9+ years of related experience in lieu of degree
  • Proficiency and expertise with project management and project controls concepts, computer applications, and analytics
  • Strong collaborative team member

Responsibilities

  • Lead development and distribution of daily, weekly, monthly and project controls reports. Gather, verify, validate and analyze data in support of project controls reporting. Distribute and archive project controls reports as appropriate. Provide quality presentation reports and present to project and leadership teams.
  • Apply senior‑level project controls expertise in core competency areas, including scheduling, cost forecasting, variance analysis, change control management, and governance/procedural compliance.
  • Oversee project‑level change control by tracking and reporting changes to project scope, schedule and cost baseline in compliance with internal governance standards and contract terms. Lead team through audit reviews as needed.
  • Serve as a technical subject matter expert for reporting tools, data aggregation, analysis, and performance metrics.
  • Oversee project controls benchmarking and self‑assessment initiatives. Identify and communicate improvement opportunities, adoption of best practices and countermeasures to address performance gaps.
  • Demonstrate senior‑level knowledge of project schedules, cost estimates, cash flow reports, and change control documentation. Perform variance analysis, earned value and critical path analyses. Conduct root cause analysis and articulate findings to leadership.
  • Collaborate with Estimators and Project Controls Analysts to establish effective cost controls management baselines and track controls baselines according to Project Management Center of Excellence Standards.
  • Maintain effective relationships with key team members and stakeholders. Support resolution of quality issues and completion of assignments including proposals, program and project tasks, and reports.
  • Partner with cross‑functional teams across project execution and project controls to ensure accurate, consistent and timely reporting.

Job description

Senior Project Controls Specialists (SrPCS) provide the skills, structure, and discipline needed to help project teams deliver work safely, efficiently, and predictably. Through accurate cost, schedule, scope, risk, and performance reporting, we enable informed decision‑making, strengthen accountability, and support successful project outcomes from planning through execution.

This role supports Major Projects within a major utility company. The position requires strong analytical judgment, a questioning attitude, and the ability to interpret project information into project schedules and cost forecasts. Candidates should have a strong analytical background as well as communication skills, as this role will involve presenting to senior leadership and detailing projects. A 50/50 understanding of Cost and Schedule is essential.

Requirements - education & experience
  • 4-year degree in business, finance, project management, engineering, technical field, or equivalent, plus 5+ years of prior work‑related experience; OR 9+ years of related experience in lieu of degree
  • Proficiency and expertise with project management and project controls concepts, computer applications, and analytics
  • Strong collaborative team member
Required skills
  • High level of technical proficiency with Microsoft Excel

Nice‑to‑have / preferred skills
  • Master's degree in business, finance, project management, or equivalent
  • PMI or AACE certification (PMP, CAPM, PMI‑SP, AACE‑CCC, AACE‑PSP, AACE‑CEP, AACE‑EVP, or equivalent)
  • Experience with Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), Project Management Office (PMO), Business Intelligence (BI) tools, and reporting dashboards
  • Proficiency with software such as Ecosys, Power Plan, Maximo, Oracle Primavera P6, MS Power BI, MS Project Server, and MS Office Suite
  • Risk management tools such as SWORD Risk Registers

Hybrid position with 3 days onsite. Occasional site visits encouraged. Some travel required for occasional field trips to project sites and annual business unit workshops (approximately 10%).
