Community HousingWorks (CHW) in San Diego seeks a Senior Project Accountant to provide accounting support for Housing Real Estate Development, focusing on job cost and construction accounting for development projects. Responsibilities include AP, draws, cost tracking, and coordination with external auditors and lenders.

The role requires strong knowledge of construction lifecycles, real estate entity structures, and experience with Yardi and MIP/Abila.

Qualifications

  • Requires Bachelor’s degree in Accounting with a minimum of five years accounting experience.
  • Construction accounting experience is required.
  • Experience with Yardi and MIP/Abila preferred.
  • Experience in Affordable Housing/Real Estate industry a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee job cost accounting and accounts payable for development projects.
  • Maintain general ledgers for development entities, including journal entries and cost capitalization.
  • Reconcile intercompany accounts across enterprise and development projects.
  • Prepare and review project-level trial balance reconciliations.
  • Monitor and analyze development project cash balances.
  • Support construction draws, funding requests, and disbursements.
  • Perform treasury functions for development projects, including cash management activities.
  • Lead year-end close and support audits for development entities.
  • Coordinate with auditors on cost certifications, eliminating entries, and Form 8609 documentation.
  • Review and guide Project Accountants to ensure accuracy and compliance in reporting.

The Senior Project Accountant provides accounting support to CHW’s Housing Real Estate Development, with a focus on job cost and construction accounting for development projects, including accounts payable, construction draws, and cost tracking. This role requires collaboration across internal teams and shared ownership of departmental financial statements to ensure accurate and timely reporting.


The position requires close collaboration with external stakeholders, including auditors, property management, lenders, and general contractors, and supports compliance with reporting requirements. Additionally, the role is responsible for documenting Real Estate Accounting policies and procedures to strengthen internal controls and standardize practices.

Role & Responsibilities:

  • Oversee job cost accounting and accounts payable for development projects in coordination with HRED
  • Maintain general ledgers for development entities, including journal entries and cost capitalization

Education and Experience:
  • Requires Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from an accredited college or related field of study with a minimum of five years accounting experience or equivalent.
  • Construction accounting experience is required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to demonstrate a strong understanding of the construction lifecycle and the entity structures typical of affordable housing developments.
  • Experience with Yardi and MIP/Abila preferred.
  • Experience in Affordable Housing industry and/or Real Estate industry a plus.
Physical Abilities:

The physical abilities to perform tasks may require prolonged sitting, standing and/or moving.

Moves throughout the office spaces, outdoor spaces and building to access areas of resident services.

Moves equipment weighing between 20-35 pounds without assistance. Moves more than 35 pounds with assistance.

Moves through outdoor spaces of varying levels and textures including uneven ground. May have to move around active construction sites and follow the site-specific safety protocol.

The noise and climate level in the work environment varies depending on the work site, including outdoor work environments. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with different abilities to perform the roles and responsibilities of this position.

This role requires working at different sites and in areas varying degrees of distance.
