Job description

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

Manage one or more complex Research and Development projects and programs. Expedite, manage, and coordinate a multitude of interrelated activities within constraints of limited human and financial resources and changing priorities. Comply with the Quality System. Manage expense and capital budgets and provide resource estimation for new program proposals. Independently lead large, complex, high-risk programs and manage overall program financial performance while ensuring alignment with divisional operating goals and business strategy.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Expertise and Problem Solving Duties
  • Coordinate input from multiple areas or multiple project managers on related projects. Identify resource requirements, cost, and time schedules. Develop implementation plans, conduct risk assessments, and develop contingency plans to accommodate unforeseen events.
  • Lead cross-functional teams through project planning exercises to develop detailed schedules and integrated project plans.
  • Define the nature of stated business or technical problems. Analyze data for true causes of problems. Develop project specifications and objectives, strategies, timelines and milestones, and design and development plans. Utilize project scheduling software to plan and track projects.
  • Develop alternatives to major business problems. Assist management in selecting specific action plans that will best address identified long-term business issues. Anticipate future problems, resolve current issues, and adapt based on prior results and project leadership experience.
  • Assure projects effectively integrate with existing programs and strategies so that long and short-term business goals are attained. Recognize the broader implications of actions and proposals on project outcomes, related systems and activities, and overall business strategy.
  • Prepare and present project progress reports to keep management and teams informed. Identify problems, resolutions, trends, and impacts on project success and propose recommendations for management action.
  • Develop project plans, work estimations, and financial forecasts for key programs.
  • Develop, communicate, and build consensus around operating goals aligned with divisional objectives.
Accountability / Required Supervision
  • Negotiate project outcomes and deliverables to meet the conflicting demands of time, cost, scope, and deadlines. Maintain project expenses within budget.
  • May function as the project contact with third-party vendors.
  • Provide leadership on strategic business issues. Drive cross-functional teams to meet milestones and deliverables established in project planning and agreed upon with senior leadership.
  • Accountable for total project scope, completion within budget constraints, and achievement of scheduled completion dates.
  • Accountable for successful completion of project tasks under direct or matrix control. Level load work to ensure effective use of available resources.
Leadership Activities
  • Solicit cooperation from a diverse group of disciplines and functions in a tactful and persuasive manner.
  • Lead others in the completion of project tasks. Manage cross-functional teams that may consist of senior-level individual contributors. Create a work environment that supports team effectiveness and provide feedback to team members on performance.
  • Manage decision-making processes and serve as the final decision-maker for conflicts within the context of agreed project plans.
  • Actively mentor and develop program team members and may provide functional supervision to one to two personnel.
  • Contribute to a positive, high-performing team culture through coaching, collaboration, and knowledge sharing.
Level of Interpersonal Skills
  • Interact with senior-level management to reach agreement regarding significant program strategies. Interface with other disciplines, customers, internal clients, project staff, and internal and external experts as required.
  • Prepare and present written and oral reports and presentations to internal and external audiences. Adjust presentation style and content to suit the audience.
  • Negotiate human and financial resources.
  • Present program strategy, risks, recommendations, and outcomes to senior management using concise, executive-level communication tailored to leadership audiences.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education

Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Science, or related technical discipline

OR

An equivalent combination of education and work experience

Experience/Background

Minimum 10 years related work experience required

  • 11+ years of experience in engineering, scientific, product development, program management, or related disciplines preferred.
  • Proven ability to lead large, complex, cross-functional programs and influence outcomes in a matrixed organization.
  • Strong financial planning, forecasting, resource management, and risk management experience.

The base pay for this position is $148,700.00 – $297,300.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
