Job description

Sr Product Cost Engineer, Amazon Custom Modules

Job ID: 2849235 | Amazon Web Services, Inc.

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to help.

You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.

The should-cost engineer will be responsible for building detailed cost models, benchmarking component costs, and supporting live negotiations with suppliers. You will interact with multiple levels within the organization and multiple functions and therefore will need to be adaptable in understanding the needs of different stakeholders.

Key Job Responsibilities
  1. Building detailed should-cost models across different electro-mechanical products (e.g., PCBAs, mechanical server chassis) for new products and products in production.
  2. Driving excellence throughout the should-cost modeling execution and establishing mechanisms to scale and streamline across similar products.
  3. Conducting should-cost training and coaching other junior cost engineers.
  4. You are the owner of Should-Cost Strategy and need to be ‘customer obsessed’ while being independent enough to fully identify the appropriate value capture path.
  5. Influencing and serving as an expert to aid in design for cost/value and improve product cost, manufacturing cost, and integration cost.
  6. Playing a critical, technical fact base holder role in supplier negotiations.
  7. Travel: Candidates need to be willing to travel internationally 30% or more, visiting suppliers and key functions to embed our Should-Cost approach.
About the Team

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud platform. We pioneered cloud computing and never stopped innovating — that’s why customers from the most successful startups to Global 500 companies trust our robust suite of products and services to power their businesses.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  1. BS/MS degree in relevant technical discipline.
  2. 8 to 10 years of experience working for a technology type company in product development related functions (manufacturing, development, innovation, research, design).
  3. Experience in fundamental manufacturing processes and related cost impact in mechanical (stamping, machining, welding, molding, etc.) or PCB and PCBA is preferred.
  4. Professional knowledge of cost modeling methods and tools.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Demonstrate strong communication and presentation skills, as the ability to deploy should-cost modeling effectively and to get stakeholders to embed these practices will be critical to long-term capability building.
  2. Demonstrate broad business knowledge to manage interactions between business disciplines.
  3. Experience in other related functions (such as cost engineering, supplier auditing, supply chain management) and change management experience gained e.g., in lean manufacturing or six sigma style programs considered a plus.
