Position Overview
Northrop Grumman Space Systems—Missile Defense Integration invites a Senior Principal Software Engineer – BM/SRM to support the Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program. This role serves U.S. President, Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders by planning, monitoring, and controlling missile defense operations worldwide. The position is based in Huntsville, AL and requires on‑site presence with no remote work or relocation assistance.
Essential Functions
- Work independently with minimal direction, applying deep technical expertise across software disciplines and understanding system‑wide implications and user needs.
- Handle unforeseen assignments and travel up to 10% of the time for business needs.
- Debug, configure, and maintain existing codebases while creating automated tools to improve developer productivity and operational efficiency.
- Design, develop, and maintain high‑throughput, object‑oriented applications using common OOP languages and Python.
- Conduct detailed analysis, design, coding, unit and integration testing, performance benchmarking, operational integration, and provide ongoing user support for complex software products.
Basic Qualifications
- Current active in‑scope DoD‑issued Secret security clearance at the time of application.
- Proficiency in Python and at least one additional object‑oriented programming language (e.g., Java, C#, or C++).
- Experience with Agile software development methodologies.
- Experience in software integration and formal testing.
- Strong background supporting software engineering on DoD programs.
- Experience in developing command and control (C2) system applications.
- Strong understanding of software development best practices with the ability to apply them in a multi‑team environment.
- Excellent problem‑solving skills with a proven track record of root‑cause analysis and issue resolution.
- Proven ability to mentor and motivate junior engineers, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced team environment.
- Experience presenting technical concepts to non‑software‑engineering audiences, including senior program leadership, government representatives, and military leaders.
- A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field with 8 years of experience; or a master’s degree with 6 years of experience; or 12 years of relevant work experience as an alternative to a degree.
Preferred Qualifications
- Understanding of standard system engineering design artifacts such as Use Cases and SysML diagrams.
- Strong knowledge of Atlassian tools (e.g., Jira, Confluence) to support Agile software development teams.

Primary Level Salary Range: $135,800.00 – $203,600.00.
U.S. Citizenship is required for all positions with a government clearance and certain other restricted positions.
