Job summary

Northrop Grumman Space Sector seeks a Sr. Principal Data Scientist – Level 4 in Magna, UT, to apply reliability, statistics, and data science to solid rocket motor design, production, test, and sustainment.

This role collaborates with engineering, quality, operations, and program management in a dynamic hardware environment. The ideal candidate has advanced degrees in quantitative fields, strong Bayesian skills, and experience with RStudio or similar tools, plus a DoD Secret clearance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Data Science, Engineering or other quantitative field with 8+ years of experience, or Master’s with 6+ years, or PhD with 4+ years.
• Must have active DoD Secret clearance at time of application.
• Knowledge of solid rocket motor components, functions, and manufacturing processes.
• Experience with probabilistic statistics and uncertainty quantification methods.
• Experience with statistics software (RStudio/Statistica or equivalent).
• Excellent teamwork, organization, and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Partner with engineering to develop failure modes and effects and model variability.
• Estimate manufacturing variability and apply SPC techniques.
• Support manufacturing improvements and defect reduction.
• Develop data models for material properties used in design and testing.
• Analyze data from performance tests on solid rocket motor systems.
• Create predictive models and annual reports for aging and sustainment of fielded hardware.
• Contribute to technology roadmaps and tool development.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

N Northrop Grumman’s Space Sector invites you to bring your pioneering spirit to our collaborative teams. As a Sr. Principal Data Scientist – Level 4 located in Magna, UT you’ll be a linchpin in missions of paramount importance, defining the art of the possible from day one. The Sr. Principal Data Scientist 4 applies reliability, statistics, and data science expertise to solid rocket motor hardware design, production, test, and sustainment. This is a highly versatile technical position, requiring strong primary collaboration with engineering, as well as work in partnership with quality, operations, supply chain, program management, and business management. The successful candidate blends knowledge of probabilistic statistics and uncertainty estimation methods with knowledge of solid rocket motor products and processes. This position will work a 9/80 schedule, with every other Friday off.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Partner with systems and design engineering to develop failure modes and effects, develop data supporting estimated variability and probabilities of failure for each component, model and analyze reliability for the entire system
• Partner with process and quality to develop estimates of manufacturing variability, capabilities, inspection, and statistical process controls
• Support manufacturing defect reduction and improvement initiatives
• Develop models and maintain data for material properties used in design based on characterization and acceptance testing
• Design, analyze and interpret data from various performance tests on solid rocket motor systems
• Develop models, databases, and provide annual reports monitoring aging trends, service life estimates, and support sustainment activities for fielded hardware
• Develop and utilize predictive cost models for products and programs
• Develop technology roadmaps and support development of new tools
• Other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Data Science, Engineering or other quantitative field (Mathematics, Industrial Math, Reliability Engineering) with 8 years of professional experience – OR – Master’s degree in Statistics, Data Science, Engineering or other quantitative field (Mathematics, Industrial Math, Reliability Engineering) with 6 years of professional experience – OR – PhD with 4 years of professional experience.
• Must have a current, active U.S. Government DoD Secret security clearance at the time of application.
• Basic knowledge of solid rocket motor components, functions, and manufacturing processes.
• Other practical experience with complex systems may be considered.
• Knowledge of systems reliability, probabilistic and Bayesian uncertainty quantification statistical methods.
• Experience with Rstudio, Statistica, or other similar statistics software.
• Ability to learn how to apply statistics and data science in novel applications.
• Excellent teamwork skills, collaborating with cross-functional teams in highly interdependent environment.
• Excellent organization, time management, and communication skills.
• Entrepreneurial drive to proactively identify opportunities and develop solutions.
• Desire to work with hardware and support a production environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Dual-degree, MS degree or other advanced training and certification preferred.

Northrop Grumman Total Rewards Primary Level Salary Range:

$135,000.00 - $202,600.00 The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.

In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
