Job summary

System One in Pittsburgh, PA is seeking a Sr. Piping Designer/Checker for a contract-to-hire role. The position entails producing piping design layouts, leading design teams as DDL/PDL, and coordinating scope, budget, and schedule.

Qualifications

• Qualification: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related discipline, piping focus preferred.
• 4+ years piping design and layout experience; 2+ years at Matrix preferred.
• Advanced knowledge of CADWorx, PDMS, or AVEVA; AVEVA highly preferred.
• Strong understanding of piping, mechanical drafting, fabrication, purchasing, and field construction processes.
• Familiar with P&ID diagrams, vendor drawings, and piping details.
• Knowledge of API, ANSI, ASME piping codes and standards.
• Detail oriented with strong accuracy in work.
• Proficient in MS Office.
• Excellent organizational and communication skills.
• Ability to work on multiple tasks under tight deadlines.

Overview

Responsibilities

• Produce design layouts and finished drawings for piping systems, ensuring accuracy and error-free quality.
• Act as the Discipline Design Lead (DDL) and possibly as the Project Design Lead (PDL), leading internal and external designers/drafters for the project.
• Assist with determining scope of work, budget, and schedule for assigned projects.
• Participate in project meetings and communicate proactively with team members and stakeholders.
• Perform detailed dimensional checks and bill of material verifications for all drawings.
• Check drawings for constructability, safety, interferences, and overall quality assurance.
• Support safety initiatives and comply with company’s Code of Business Conduct and Ethics.
• Coordinate and manage project resources within scope, budget, and schedule constraints.
• Assist lower classification drafters with questions and issues during project execution.
• Perform additional responsibilities as directed.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related discipline with focus on piping design preferred, or equivalent education/experience.
• 4+ years of related piping design and layout experience required; 2+ years of experience at Matrix preferred.
• Advanced knowledge of 3D CAD systems such as CADWorx, PDMS, or AVEVA; experience with AVEVA highly preferred.
• Strong understanding of piping, mechanical drafting disciplines, and fabrication, purchasing, and field construction processes.
• Familiarity with P&ID diagrams, vendor drawings, and piping details.
• Knowledge of API, ANSI, ASME codes and standards applicable to piping design.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy in work.
• Proficient in MS Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Excellent organizational, listening, oral, and written communication skills.
• Ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously under tight deadlines.
• Occasional overtime and travel may be required.
