Job summary

Socket.dev is seeking a Sr. Metrology Engineer to ensure proper calibration and qualification of pharmaceutical lab instruments. You will manage instrument lifecycle, preventive and corrective maintenance, and support GMP/GLP compliance across the site.

The role requires hands-on calibration experience, strong documentation skills, and the ability to coordinate with vendors and internal teams. On-site work in New York state with regulatory-focused responsibilities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a technical field.

Responsibilities

Role Summary The Sr. Metrology Engineer ensures that all laboratory instruments and critical equipment used in pharmaceutical development and testing are properly calibrated, maintained, qualified, and compliant with regulatory requirements. This role supports reliable laboratory operations by managing equipment lifecycle activities, coordinating preventive and corrective maintenance, and ensuring all systems meet GMP, GLP, and internal quality standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform and/or coordinate calibration of laboratory instruments according to approved procedures and schedules.
• Maintain calibration standards, reference materials, and traceability to national/international metrology bodies.
• Review calibration results, assess out of tolerance conditions, and support investigations as needed.
• Maintain accurate calibration records in the equipment management system.
• Execute and oversee preventive and corrective maintenance for laboratory equipment, including coordination with external vendors.
• Troubleshoot equipment issues and ensure timely resolution to minimize downtime.
• Lead or support equipment qualification activities (IQ/OQ/PQ) for new and existing laboratory instruments.
• Support periodic review and requalification assessments.
• Maintain equipment files, logs, certificates, and electronic records in accordance with data integrity principles.
• Participate in audits and inspections, providing documentation and technical support.
• Provide technical guidance to laboratory staff on proper equipment use and care.

Qualification and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Metrology, Life Sciences, or related technical field (or equivalent experience).
• 2-5+ years of experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, or regulated laboratory environments.
• Hands on experience with calibration, equipment maintenance, and qualification activities.
• Familiarity with GMP/GLP, data integrity, and regulatory expectations for laboratory equipment
• Excellent communication, documentation, and problem-solving skills.

Physical Requirements The physical requirements of the position generally include: standing, walking, sitting, using hands and fingers, reaching with hands and arms, talking, and hearing. In some circumstances, bending, kneeling, crouching, stooping, and crawling may apply. This position may require lifting to 25 pounds occasionally. This is an on-site position.
