The Senior Medical Assistant (MA) participates in providing patient care at the appropriate skill level. They are responsible for delivering a standard of care that meets or exceeds that of a reasonably competent and knowledgeable Medical Assistant. The Senior Medical Assistant also assists in training and orienting MA staff. Approximately 25% of their time is dedicated to clinic-specific initiatives that improve processes and metrics, supporting their leadership development. The Senior MA performs all duties of a Medical Assistant within their scope of practice, under the supervision of a provider (TX) or physician (FL).

This role involves organizing the clinical environment and supporting patient care activities, including assisting physicians and nursing personnel, and performing procedures listed under Job Functions below, under supervision of a medical provider. The Sr. MA helps identify patient needs, communicates data to the provider or clinical team, and delivers quality customer service. They ensure policies and procedures, including infection control, privacy, and confidentiality, are followed.

Primary Responsibilities:
  1. Perform all duties at an expert level within the scope of a Medical Assistant. Operate diagnostic equipment, remove staples, change dressings, obtain cultures, administer non-intravenous medication, collect specimens, perform EKGs, and conduct quality control checks on equipment. Prepare and sterilize medical equipment.
  2. Spend 25% of time on clinic metrics, projects, and initiatives to support workflow and process improvements.
  3. Accurately document patient care in the medical record and alert leadership to documentation errors.
  4. Train and mentor other MAs, including documentation support.
  5. Promote a positive work environment and serve as a culture ambassador.
  6. Coordinate patient care as directed by the provider and policies.
  7. Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  8. Handle standard and non-standard requests independently and solve routine problems.
  9. Organize exam and treatment rooms, stock supplies, and ensure sterilization and inventory accuracy.
  10. Create an environment supporting infection prevention.
  11. Conduct telephone and in-person screening for intake and information gathering.
  12. Support and follow Standard Delegation of Orders.
  13. Foster a collaborative team environment.
  14. Ensure ongoing training and performance improvement.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Current BLS certification for healthcare providers.
  • At least 3 years as a certified MA or 5+ years combined certified and non-certified experience, with 2+ years certified.
  • Proficiency in electronic health records and medical terminology.
  • Mastery of ICD-10 and CPT coding.
  • Ability to mentor others and react calmly in emergencies.
  • Intermediate Excel skills and excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to change.
  • Proof of immunity or vaccination for MMR, Varicella, Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis, and Tuberculosis screening.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Over 1 year of lead or supervisory experience.
  • Bilingual skills.
Physical & Mental Requirements:
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull over 35 lbs. with assistance.
  • Ability to stand for long periods.
  • Fine motor skills for operating equipment.
  • Ability to understand verbal and written instructions.
  • Logical reasoning for problem-solving.
  • Exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.
  • Ability to discriminate shades of color when reading dipsticks.

The hourly pay range is $16.88 to $33.22, based on full-time employment and various factors including location, education, experience, and certifications.
