Job summary

Citrine LLC seeks an Sr. Mechanical Engineering Manager to lead our mechanical engineering team while remaining engaged in technical work. Based in Colorado with hybrid flexibility, you will mentor staff, guide design across HVAC, plumbing, and process systems, and ensure project success for commercial, industrial, and government projects.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Citrine’s mechanical engineering team, providing direction, mentorship, and technical support.
  • Serve as senior mechanical technical lead for complex client-driven projects.
  • Oversee design activities: HVAC, plumbing/piping, process/mechanical systems, and equipment.
  • Review deliverables for accuracy, code compliance, and alignment with requirements.
  • Guide project execution from design development through commissioning and closeout.
  • Coordinate with PMs, discipline leads, contractors, and clients to define scope and ensure execution.

Description

We are seeking an experienced Sr. Mechanical Engineering Manager to lead our mechanical engineering team while remaining actively engaged in technical project work. This role is ideal for a seasoned mechanical professional who enjoys developing teams, solving complex engineering challenges, and serving as a trusted technical resource for clients and project teams.

The Sr. Mechanical Engineering Manager will oversee mechanical engineering team operations, mentor engineers and technical staff, support project execution, and provide technical leadership across commercial, industrial, and government-related projects. This position will help guide mechanical design and analysis activities including HVAC systems, plumbing systems, process piping, equipment selection, and commissioning support.

This position is based in Lakewood or Grand Junction, CO with flexibility for hybrid work arrangements. Travel to project sites, client locations, and other Citrine offices is required.

Requirements
  • Lead and manage Citrine’s mechanical engineering team, providing technical direction, mentorship, and support across varying experience levels.
  • Serve as the senior mechanical technical lead for commercial, industrial, and government/federal projects.
  • Provide oversight and technical guidance for mechanical design activities including:
    • HVAC systems
    • Plumbing and piping systems
    • Process/mechanical systems and equipment
    • Energy efficiency and system optimization
    • Commissioning and troubleshooting support
  • Review mechanical engineering deliverables for technical accuracy, quality, code compliance, and alignment with client requirements.
  • Provide technical support and guidance on complex project challenges and design decisions.
  • Support project teams through design development, construction administration, commissioning, and closeout activities.
  • Participate in client meetings, project kick-offs, design reviews, and technical discussions.
  • Coordinate with project managers, discipline leads, contractors, and clients to ensure electrical scope is clearly defined and successfully executed.
  • Support resource planning, workload balancing, and assignment prioritization across the mechanical team..
  • Identify project risks, scope changes, technical challenges, and resource needs.
  • Establish and maintain mechanical quality control processes, standards, and best practices.
  • Support recruiting, onboarding, mentoring, and professional development of mechanical team members..
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide feedback to support employee growth.
  • Foster a collaborative, accountable team culture consistent with Citrine’s values.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive mechanical engineering experience, with demonstrated experience leading projects, teams, or technical initiatives.
  • Experience managing, mentoring, or providing technical direction to mechanical engineers, designers, or technicians.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems design and analysis for commercial, industrial, and/or government facilities.
  • Experience with HVAC systems, plumbing, piping, and mechanical equipment design.
  • Experience reviewing mechanical drawings, specifications, calculations, and technical documentation.
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards (e.g., ASHRAE, IMC, IPC, SMACNA, and other industry standards).
  • Experience supporting construction, commissioning, startup, troubleshooting, or field activities.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate with clients, project teams, and internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while supporting team performance and project deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred or ability to obtain licensure.
  • Experience leading mechanical engineering teams within a consulting, design, or engineering services environment.
  • Experience supporting commercial, industrial, utility, government, or federal projects.
  • Experience with energy modeling, system optimization, or sustainability initiatives is a plus.
  • Experience with Revit, AutoCAD, or mechanical design software.
  • Project management experience or PMP certification is a plus.

  • Candidate must successfully pass a background check, which may include verification of employment, education, and other records in accordance with state, local, and federal requirements.
  • A valid driver’s license must be possessed and maintained.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain access authorization for government and other secured facilities and sites is required.
