What You Will Do (Job Summary)

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mechanical Engineer to join our team in the development of mobile robotic systems for pipe inspection and repair. As a Mechanical Engineer, you will play a key role in designing, analyzing, and optimizing the mechanical systems and components working with other engineering disciplines such as electrical, firmware, software and labs. Ideal candidates will apply interdisciplinary knowledge to create innovative solutions for electromechanical systems. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, purchasing, customer service and quality assurance, to ensure the successful development and launch of high-quality products. In addition, you will design, test, and develop product and product components following company and industry standards while assisting in the supervision of laboratory activities for assigned projects.

What You Can Expect In This Role (Job Responsibilities)
  • Design and develop mechanical systems and components for cameras, transporters, lifts, and other devices, including mechanisms, bodies, bearings, motors, gears, seals, controls, etc., following company and industry standards.
  • Conduct detailed analysis, simulations, and calculations to evaluate and optimize the performance, efficiency, and durability of components and systems.
  • Collaborate with product management, electrical and firmware engineering and other functions to define product requirements, specifications, and design goals for mobile robotic systems.
  • Create 3D models and engineering drawings using SolidWorks, ensuring adherence to industry standards and best practices.
  • Work with design personnel on the detailed layout, prints, parts specifications, and bill of materials for the product.
  • Develop non-routine test methods, instrumentation, and procedures not covered by recognized Approval Agency requirements or rating codes.
  • Analyze and interpret test data, making design modifications if necessary, to meet product performance and safety requirements.
  • Conduct product and component testing in accordance with CUES standards and recognized approval agency requirements and codes, such as UL, ANSI, ISO, and/or CSA.
  • Develop and maintain project schedules, ensuring timely completion of activities related to product design and development.
  • Collaborate with Product Management and other functions to formulate and update product design specifications.
  • Provide technical support and assistance to other departments, including Operations/Manufacturing, Quality, Customer Service, Lab, Product Managers, and Purchasing.
  • Identify potential technical improvements to existing products/processes/services or cost reductions.
  • Lead cross-functional teams in the development, maintenance, and update of DFMEAs, and assist in the development of PFMEAs and Process Control Plans.
  • Stay updated with industry trends, advancements, and emerging technologies in pipe inspection robotics.
  • Mentor engineering team members on core engineering principles/practices and assist in their professional growth.
  • May provide work direction to junior engineers, lead project teams, lead engineering wide process improvements, lead creation of standards as a subject matter expert or be a product owner.
What we are looking for (Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education)
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum 6+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, specifically in the design and development of robotics, automation, AGVs, drones, and/or cameras.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks) for 3D modeling.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes including machining processes, molding, and casting.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T and experience generating engineering documentation.
  • Extensive machine design experience including power transmission, sealing, and mechatronics packaging.
  • Experience working on interdisciplinary teams who develop electromechanical systems and basic understanding of electrical engineering principals and software development processes.
  • Familiarity with regulatory approval agency requirements, including UL, ANSI, ISO, and/or CSA.
  • Working knowledge of project management principles and experience in product lifecycle management.
  • Strong understanding of electromechanical mechanisms and controls in automation.
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis, design for manufacturing/assembly, design for reliability and relevant hand calculations.
  • Experience working on stage gate new product development and sustaining engineering.
  • Some level of controls programming and electronics skill preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of ERP systems, such as IFS, and product lifecycle management systems, such as PDM Pro, is a plus.
