Job summary

CUES, Inc. within SPX Technologies seeks a Firmware Engineer to design, develop, and maintain embedded software powering robotic and inspection systems for underground infrastructure.

You will collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to build reliable firmware for microcontrollers and Embedded Linux platforms. You will implement firmware for bare-metal and Zephyr RTOS, develop communication protocols, and support system testing and performance optimization.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of embedded firmware design and development.
  • Strong proficiency in C and C++ for embedded systems.
  • Experience with Embedded Linux and Zephyr RTOS.
  • Knowledge of Ethernet-based communication and TCP/IP networking.
  • Understanding of embedded hardware, schematics, and interfaces.

Responsibilities

How you will make an Impact (Job Summary)

SPX is a diverse team of unique individuals who all make an impact. As a Firmware Engineer at CUES Inc., you will design, develop, and maintain embedded software that powers advanced robotic and inspection systems used to inspect underground infrastructure. You will collaborate with crossfunctional engineering teams to build reliable, highperformance firmware for microcontroller and Embedded Linux platforms that support innovative inspection technologies.

What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)

While each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:

  • Design, develop, and maintain embedded C/C++ software for microcontrollers and Embedded Linux systems.
  • Implement firmware for baremetal and Zephyr RTOS environments.
  • Develop and maintain communication protocols and network interfaces for Ethernetconnected devices.
  • Collaborate with electrical and mechanical engineers to integrate firmware with robotic control systems.
  • Participate in system testing, product verification, and performance optimization.
Engineering & System Integration:
  • Perform handsont debugging using hardware tools such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.
  • Troubleshoot hardware-software interactions in embedded systems.
  • Support systemlevel integration of firmware with robotics and inspection equipment.
  • Document firmware architecture, design decisions, testing, and revisions according to engineering standards.
Continuous Improvement & Collaboration:
  • Work closely with crossfunctional engineering teams to deliver highquality embedded solutions.
  • Contribute to product development and engineering best practices.
  • Support troubleshooting and resolution of field or system issues when needed.
What we are looking for (Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education)

We each bring something to the table, and we are looking for someone who has:

Required Experience
  • 5+ years of experience in embedded firmware design and development.
  • Strong proficiency in C and C++ for embedded systems.
  • Experience working with Embedded Linux and real time operating systems (preferably Zephyr).
  • Working knowledge of Ethernetbased communication and TCP/IP networking.
  • Strong understanding of embedded hardware, schematics, and digital/analog interfaces.
Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Experience developing firmware for robotic systems or motion control applications.
  • Familiarity with version control systems such as Git and modern development workflows.
  • Understanding of real time systems and embedded bus protocols such as SPI, I2C, and CAN.
  • Experience with system level debugging and embedded product development cycles.
Education & Certifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
Travel & Working Environment
  • Hybrid schedule with approximately three days per week in the office.
  • Overtime may be required to meet project schedules.
  • Occasional travel to customer sites for testing or troubleshooting.
  • Office and production environment; must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and use basic tools when needed.
