Job description

Company Overview

KLA is a global leader in diversified electronics for the semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem. Virtually every electronic device in the world is produced using our technologies. No laptop, smartphone, wearable device, voice‑controlled gadget, flexible screen, VR device or smart car would have made it into your hands without us. KLA invents systems and solutions for the manufacturing of wafers and reticles, integrated circuits, packaging, printed circuit boards, and flat panel displays. The innovative ideas and devices that are advancing humanity all begin with inspiration, research, and development. KLA focuses more than average on innovation and we invest 15% of sales back into R&D. Our expert teams of physicists, engineers, data scientists, and problem‑solvers work together with the world’s leading technology providers to accelerate the delivery of tomorrow’s electronic devices. Life here is exciting and our teams thrive on tackling really hard problems. There is never a dull moment with us.

Group/Division

With over 40 years of semiconductor process control experience, chipmakers around the globe rely on KLA to ensure that their fabs ramp next‑generation devices to volume production quickly and cost‑effectively. Enabling the movement toward advanced chip design, KLA’s Global Products Group (GPG), which is responsible for creating all of KLA’s metrology and inspection products, is looking for the best and the brightest research scientists, software engineers, application development engineers, and senior product technology process engineers. The RAPID division is the world‑leading provider of reticle inspection solutions for the semiconductor industry. The company provides inspection solutions to both mask shops and semiconductor fabs to ensure that lithography yields are consistently high, thus enabling cost‑effective manufacturing.

Job Description

This mid‑career mechanical design engineer will focus on sustaining programs for RAPID. Obsolescence is the key driver for the success of the RAPID legacy systems which are still in HVM. The candidate will play a pivotal supporting role for sustaining the design, fabrication, and performance characterization of opto‑mechanical modules, precision mechanical mechanisms, mechanical packaging, racks, chassis, and mechatronic systems. They will build technical relationships with vendors and will have the opportunity to learn and eventually own the design process, including requirements specification, feasibility studies, analysis (including FEA modeling, thermal, CFD, conceptual and detailed design, detail drawings, design review presentations, procurement of prototype parts), support prototype testing and system integration, and handoff to manufacturing. They will also own the process of taking projects from design concept through manufacturing build and will detail and address all issues through the product phases.

Responsibilities
  • Create innovative designs involving a combination of precision mechanisms, ultra high vacuum systems, opto‑mechanical design, vibration isolation, and electronic packaging.
  • Develop a deep understanding of tolerance analysis, GD&T, error budgeting, flow‑up and flow‑down of requirements.
  • Develop skills in finite element analysis, creep and stress relaxation, modal analysis.
  • Perform meaningful thermal analysis: heat transfer, temperature gradients, thermal transients, thermo‑elastic analysis.
  • Build vendor relationships: component fabrication, manufacturing process transfer, qualification.
  • Select materials and resolve fabrication methods.
  • Exhibit excellent interpersonal skills for working with engineering, manufacturing, and new product introduction team members in a concurrent environment.
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of physics and mechanics.
  • Mechanical design, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Exhibit excellent communication and team‑working skills.
  • Familiarity with mechanical manufacturing processes including machining, sheet‑metal fabrication, welding, etc.
  • Must be proficient in 3D solid modeling CAD; ProE/Creo preferred.
