Job summary

Waters Corporation is seeking a Sr. Mechanical Engineer to lead design and development of precision mechanical and optomechanical systems for analytical instruments. You will guide components from concept through production, collaborating across optics, fluidics, electronics, firmware, and software teams.

You will mentor junior engineers, apply DFM/ GD&T, and drive engineering best practices to improve reliability and manufacturability. Strong CAD, FEA/CFD, and project leadership are essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering; Master’s preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience in precision mechanical/electromechanical design for production.
  • Proficiency in CAD modeling and GD&T per ASME Y14.5.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and create detailed design and mechanical layout of components, subassemblies, and top-level instruments from concept through production.
  • Develop and review design concepts, drawings, BOMs, and assembly processes.
  • Conduct detailed engineering analysis and testing to verify design goals.
  • Perform mechanical, fluid, thermal, and systems analyses to support designs.
  • Lead prototype builds and preproduction activities.
  • Provide mentoring to junior engineers and technicians.
  • Utilize DFM and GD&T throughout product development.
  • Coordinate NPI transitions to volume manufacturing.

Overview

Join a dynamic and innovative R&D team dedicated to developing the next generation of light scattering, field-flow fractionation (FFF), and chromatography-based analytical instruments. As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will lead the design, development, integration, and optimization of precision mechanical and optomechanical systems from concept through production.

Working in a multidisciplinary environment spanning optics, fluidics, electronics, firmware, software, and chemistry, you will be responsible for architecting robust mechanical solutions that enable best-in-class instrument performance, reliability, manufacturability, and serviceability. You will play a key role in advancing new technology platforms while mentoring junior engineers and driving engineering best practices.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and create detailed design and mechanical layout of components, subassemblies, and top-level instruments from concept through production
  • Develop and review design concepts, drawings, bills of material, and assembly processes
  • Conduct detailed engineering analysis and test of components, subassemblies, and instruments to verify design and specification goals
  • Perform mechanical, fluid, thermal, and systems analyses to support new and existing designs
  • Lead in prototype build and preproduction activities
  • Develop, design and implement equipment, tooling, fixturing, and processes to achieve production requirements for safety, delivery and cost
  • Provide assignments and technical mentoring to junior level Engineers, Designers, and Technicians
  • Broadly utilize DFM (Design For Manufacture) methods and GD&T
  • Prepare, follow through with, and present design and drawing reviews
  • Work closely with NPI (New Product Introduction) to support the smooth transition of design into volume manufacturing
Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years industry experience in design and analysis of precision mechanical/electromechanical components/assemblies for production/

Skills:

  • Proficiency designing precision mechanical components and assemblies taking into consideration design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, interchangeability, ease of assembly, and cost
  • Proficiency using 3D parametric modeling software (preferably Solidworks or UGNX)
  • Proficiency conducting Finite Element Analysis (CFD and experience with ANSYS considered a plus)
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, materials, solid and fluid mechanics, and heat transfer
  • Strong knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5 2009 as well as industry drafting standards
  • Knowledge of injection molded plastics design desirable
  • Experience with DFM (Design for Manufacture) methodology
  • Experience processing ECO's, practicing organized revision control using a Product Data Management tool (PDM - SAP preferred)
  • Fluency in English - written and spoken
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within and outside of team, possessing strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with management, peers, suppliers and customers
