Job description

Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer, Prototype, New Programs

The New Programs Engineering team works at the front-end of vehicle design and development, working in an iterative environment to study, simulate, build, and prove Tesla’s future generation of vehicles. This position will interact with many cross-functional teams from the Design, Vehicle Engineering, and Powertrain Engineering teams in creating different prototypes for engineering development. This is a mechanical design engineering position where product design expertise and a fundamental, first principles approach to problem solving are far more important than extensive project engineering or automotive industry specific experience.

What You’ll Do
  • Mechanical Design Engineering – Support vehicle engineers, engineering technicians and prototype fabricators in defining prototype manufacturing strategies and key design criteria that outputs highly effective and manufacturable parts that solve complex mechanical challenges.
  • Concept Development – Brainstorm and collaborate with engineers, designers, and users in creating new solutions for automotive applications. Develop the designs using CAD and FEA and build your designs to prove them out and refine them over time.
  • Prototyping – Rapidly design and manufacture limited volume prototypes vehicles with tight timelines working with a talented group of mechanical, electrical, harness and firmware engineers. Working with and supporting teams with a diverse set of skills taking designs through fabrication, part assembly, and vehicle assembly process.
  • Own vehicle subsystems for concept prototype and mule builds taking design from an idea through integrated 3D design, then build the system into a vehicle and test its functions.
What You’ll Bring
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in a product development environment.
  • Hands-on experience in designing and building electro-mechanical systems.
  • Broad knowledge of rapid prototyping methodologies and techniques for metals, polymers and other materials.
  • Capability to parametrically use 3D CAD software, an understanding of engineering fundamentals, and capability to run FEA.
  • Effectively handle multiple priorities, organize workloads, and meet tight delivery timelines.
  • Detail-oriented personality with effective documentation and reporting.
  • Excellent communicator, resourceful, and mindful of time management.
Compensation and Benefits
